Influences
Every great woman singer I've ever heard has contributed in some way to the shaping of my own voice. From the great classic singers of my childhood in the '50 like Ella Fitzgerald, Edith Piaf, Rosemary Clooney, Peggy Lee and Kate Smith, to the "girls with the guitars" in the 60's and 70's like Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell, Mary Travers, Ronnie Gilbert, Sylvia Tyson, and most definitely, Odetta, my voice teacher back in 1975. That was the year I began to tour, and I discovered that there were other women out there doing what I was doing, and they inspired me to keep on going. Women like Rosalie Sorrels, Peggy Seeger, Jean Ritchie, Jean Redpath, Margaret MacArthur, Holly Near, Janice Ian, Kate Wolf, Mary McCaslin, Cindy Kallett, Sally Rogers and Bonnie Koloc. There are many others who continue to inspire and influence me, but it's my friends and trio partners Anne Hills & Cindy Mangsen, who have been the most important women along this path. It's an ever evolving process... a growing, stretching and reaching for something that isn't quite tangible. Learning from all these women has helped me be a better singer and performer, and I still learn from them every time I hear any one of them sing.
