We used to call ourselves The Brewkowskis, but the band has outgrown the name, evolving into a heavier and less intoxicated trio. After years of brainstorming we came up with Prisoner Cinema. The name refers to the phenomenon experienced by prisoners sentenced to do time in the hole. Lack of stimulation on the retinas causes the brain to create displays of bright lights and flashing colors. Plus its just a cool name, so draw your own metaphors and run with it.
***Oddly enough, this is the closest explanation I can come up with for what I see in roughly 85% of my visual field, being born with a genetic condition that causes retinal deterioration leading to eventual blindness. Heads up to anyone out there at our shows. I don't mean to snub you, be a dick, or leave you hanging. I'm just near-blind, and completely night-blind, so chances are I won't be able to see you in a dimly lit bar. If you see me fumbling around aimlessly, I'm most likely looking for the bar or the washroom, so kindly grab me by the arm and lead the way!***
-(note from Paul).
The band has been independently touring, releasing albums, and supporting their local scene since 1999.
Prisoner Cinema do it for kicks and have no real ambitions of commercial success. The band members have day jobs, serious relationships, and two out of the three of us have kids. While we don't really claim to be a political band, our songs aren't afraid to touch on the surreal experience of living amongst a culture obsessed with wealth, image, and a misguided sense of superiority. Think of it as a coping mechanism for a few aging rockers.
That being said, our laid back approach to the band allows us to take 'er nice and easy, releasing albums when we feel like it and touring when the mood strikes us. This is likely why the band lives on while too many other good bands burn out or are forced to call it quits.
