"When you tap into people’s sense of play, miracles happen," states Kitty Love, program director.
The 2008 program was funded by a generous grant from the City of Asheville, by downtown residents, businesses and other generous and concerned stakeholders, and supporters of the arts and our creative community. We would also like to thank the Mountain Xpress for their generous contribution to this program.

Pritchard Park Arts is excited about spring! Posted at 12:07 AM Mar 14 view more
About me: Asheville’s community came together this past spring and summer and filled Pritchard Park with performances, art, crafts and more. Area non-profit Arts 2 People, as well as generous neighbors, businesses, and the City of Asheville joined efforts to utilize creative local resources to make a difference with this pilot program. Park goers and park passers by experienced local performers, musicians, drummers, clowns, magicians, contortionists, belly dancers, dancers, vaudeville actors, and hula hoopers in Pritchard Park downtown. Other activities included interactive art fun and special events such as an artists’ market, workshops, classes, and more.
Program Director Kitty Love states, “The goal of the PPCAP is to reconnect the community to what a public square can be. It is ideally a place that brings us all together for enjoyment of the unique experience of who we collectively are, and what we collectively create. It is a showcase for our talents, a stage where we can express our values and concerns, and a meeting place to recreate, refresh and rejuvenate our connections to each other. Integral to the success of this vision is the participation of all of us, both as stewards of the park and stewards of the larger community experience.”
The series program schedule consisted of lunchtime events Monday - Thursday from 11:30am to 1:30pm and early evening events Monday - Thursday from 5pm to 7pm with various Saturday artists’ market 10 to 4pm.
This concept came into being when the City Council appointed The Pritchard Park Committee to discuss the possibilities of greater use of Pritchard Park. They met throughout the year and involved community input in the decision making process. The committee then issued a report citing best practices for parks with similar issues in other cities, including arts programs such as this one, and noted the great success enjoyed by other cities upon implementation of similar programs. Members of The Pritchard Park Committee have recommitted to the stewardship of the park through a Pritchard Park conservancy group, which will oversee The Pritchard Park Cultural Arts Program in coordination with the City, and will bring this and other programs to the park in the future.
The Pritchard Park Cultural Arts Program creates a hospitable atmosphere in the park for everyone to enjoy by entertaining locals as well as tourists. This program is a way for the entire community and the government to invest in the diverse creative experience that is Asheville by means of cultivating relationships amongst the people that pass through downtown on a daily basis. PPCAP enables a variety of local artists to perform in the park without the need to apply individually for a permit, and they will receive generous financial compensation for their work. Arts will be used as a community asset to bridge the boundaries of age, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status to bring more positive attention to this currently underused park, by means of simple grassroots ideas.
The 2008 program was funded by a generous grant from the City of Asheville, by downtown residents, businesses and other concerned stakeholders, as well as supporters of the arts and our creative community. The City of Asheville has pledged $10,000 to the project. Business leaders, developers and others donated an additional $15,000. IOf we are to continue this project next year we will need to raise funding for the 2008 program. If you are interested in donating or helping us to fundraise, that would be greatly appreciated by many who have benefited from this program.
The Pritchard Park Cultural Arts Program welcomes your ideas and proposal submissions, donations, and volunteer inquiries. Suggestions and feedback are welcome. There are many sponsorship opportunities available to support this creative and innovative project. Anyone interested should contact PPCAP director, Kitty Love. Please send us a message if you are interested.

For the second year in a row, WNC magazine is putting out the
call to Western North Carolina’s emerging visual artists. It’s a
crowded field around here for talented people and sometimes it can be
difficult to get your work seen by the public. That’s why we’re looking
for painters, sculptors, ceramicists, photographers, mixed media
artist, fabric artists, and any other type of local visual artist who’s
looking for their opportunity to reach a wider audience.
We’re accepting submissions for On the Verge, a juried competition,
from now until Friday, January 15, 2010. Submit your entry at www.wncmagazine.com/otv. The selected visual artists
will not only be featured in WNC magazine’s Arts Issue in June,
but will also have their work exhibited in a month-long show at Flood
Gallery & Fine Arts Center in the heart of Asheville’s River Arts
District.
