About me:
From a young age I have always had a fascination for dj’ing but it wasn’t until a house party in 2002 where I had a chance to use my friend Dj Raver’s turntables that I decided it was about time I invested in some equipment. The first turntables I bought where a pair of Numark TT1500 and a Behringer VMX200 (I think) mixer.
At that time I was very much into trance music. Absolutely loved the stuff and spent a fortune on buying trance vinyl’s, classics and new. During my first year of university I played a few gigs that were organised by the Dj society that I was apart of. Looking back I was awful, train wreck every mix! During my second year I moved away from trance and started to listen to and play funky house. Again with the Dj society I was a member of, we held a weekly residency at out local uni bar this time playing funky stuff.
2005 was the year I decided it was time to upgrade from the crappy turntables I had. Rather then going for another intermediate set up I thought id go all out. I got myself a pair of Pioneer CDJ1000’s MKII and a DJM500. My music taste also changed at this point. This was around the time electro was really starting to make an impact. The likes of The Swedish Mafia were really hitting the spot.
A year or so after my music taste finally matured to what I primarily listen to and play now, Tech and Minimal House. I currently have a series of mixes which I’ve named ‘Tech Therapy’, at the time of writing this nearly into its tenth mix. I’ve got my own formula which I use for these mixes, always starting off minimal and mellow then progressing into techier sounds be it tech house, progressive or techno. I also like to take my time nowadays getting the track selection right. From previous experience I’ve learnt rushing mixes just results in rubbish selections which results in an overall crap mix. Last November I was lucky enough to have the 4th mix in the series to be selected for the Pick and Mix section of DJmag (Nov ’07).
Recently I’ve started a new job so I am always away from my CDJ’s, bit of a bummer! Because of this I’ve got myself Ableton to allow me to still make mixes. Hopefully my creativity will start to shine at some point.
