In the Central Valley of California its business as usual, burbs and
burgeoning traffic. It is an area that has long been classified as
typically vanilla with a hint of boring. But the Sacramento Valley
holds much more promise for its own music scene if one looks beyond
the cover of a book. Enter three bloques known as Private Criminals.
Born and bred from this culturally lackluster paradise for the retired,
these three young gentlemen have fashioned their own funked out
brand of rock n’roll that brings a little sexy to Dawson’s Creek. They
attack their instruments like contract killers, with raw emotion and
flare, and not a drop of blood is spared as they leave a pint on stage
at every show.
They have been said to sound like a crossbred - Sly and The Family
Stone sleeps with Red Hot Chili Peppers, makes out with, Sublime
and it is so sublime. Private Criminal’s formation was, much like their
style of play, sort of an organic process. Nick Matteis grew up with
music being elemental to his life as his father played professionally
throughout his childhood often taking the young scribe to gigs with
“roady” status. At the age of 9 Nick displayed a natural talent for
singing and fell in love with the guitar at the age of 15. He was
incorporated into the family band at the age of twelve and has since
then been performing before audiences.
Nick and his father had developed an acoustic duo act that would
prove to be more dynamic than any listener might expect. While
attending college at the University of Nevada at Reno, Nick sought
further training in vocal instruction and played hundreds of dates
with his father. This regiment spawned an original vocal style and
guitar accompaniment that would constitute a one third, and a half
parts, of Private Criminals.
The other two and a half thirds reside in the capable hands of Davis
Kahle (bass) and Pat Millar (percussion), both with an affinity for music
of their own. For Pat, Davis, and Nick music is no less critical to their
lives as is breathing.
Over the last year they have rendered many new found fans sore in
the neck from enduring a healthy serving of sneak attack funky rock.
They have played various shows in the “Great Multicolored Northern
California”, been featured on the Nor Cal Local Roots Music Internet
radio and college radio, have had their tracks selected for use on the
television show, “Amazing Adventures of a Nobody”, and performed
at various local music festivals. They continue to expand their horizons
constantly booking new venues and relentlessly pursuing the “Electric
Dream”.
