   About PRIYA THOMAS

and there's the paradox..you can't see a thing except all backwards in the great and terrible mirror. so you sit there till he's walked by. till u see a hairline crack. the curse of glass. tell yourself don't look at it straight on. never look head on...

"Stunningly uncrafty...Priya Thomas is Blood Heron is an unguarded album of betrayal, cutting losses and creating things from scratch. It's raw stuff - all guts, bones and jugular veins" -
Disc of the Week, Brad Wheeler, The Globe and Mail

"In a world where so many female singers make little more than background music, here's a songwriter who is not afraid to stand up in front, take risks, and challenge her listeners. And she can write uncompromising, half-broken songs as good as Tom Waits or anyone else. This is an extraordinary album." -
Berkeley Place -"Buy-or-Die", Brooklyn, NY

"The album stands with some of the best homespun work by folks like Sufjan Stevens and Bruce Springsteen. With limited session players and garage sale instruments, the album simmers with ramshackle beauty." -
Jason Lewis, FFwd Weekly, Calgary

"Simply knee-buckling songwriting skills to fall in love with... Blood Heron is Priya Thomas' naked expression of all that she is and because she makes no excuses or apologies for it, it is a potent and beautiful record. Songwriters of any stripe can only hope to release a record as strong as this." -
Bill Adams, Ground Control, L.A

"Both the chops and the nerve to hang with the Bob Dylans and Lucinda Williamses of the songwriting world. Playing most of the instruments herself, including pots and pans on “Farewell Creek,” Priya Thomas has taken her deep knowledge of musical history and channeled it into a mix of songs that almost don’t fit together, but somehow work perfectly." -
Joshua deGroot, The Gateway Online, University of Alberta

"Poetess Priya is Canada's answer to Patti Smith, only she's a much better singer, a much better writer and a whole lot smarter. Plus, she lives up to the song title 'Your Guitar, My Undoing' by unleashing a blistering solo the likes of which hasn't been heard since Fripp lost a grip on 'Here Come the Warm Jets'." -
Jeffrey Morgan, The Detroit Metro Times

"Thomas' first-take creations are built on a blues/folk foundation, with guitars, piano, organ and omnichord kicking it drawn out and pretty, raw and gritty, or stoney and droney" -
Disc of the Week, Lorraine Carpenter, The Montreal Mirror

"Spitting out the lyrics the way Dylan spewed out 'It's All Over Now Baby Blue,' Thomas manages to come across as both seething and perfectly composed" -
John Sakamoto, The Toronto Star

"An uncompromising artistic statement, combing raw, Tom Waits-ian instrumentation with waves of free association lyrics reminiscent of Mary Margaret O'Hara's cult classic, Miss America." -
Jason Schneider, The Record, Kitchener-Waterloo

"...beautifully layered songs with a lo-fi feel, a voice that can pull off both a rock-out growl (“Vigilante”) and sweet harmonies (“O Holy Texas”), and lyrics that cut deep."
-
Amanda Farrell, Monday Magazine, Victoria

"Blood Heron rewards the listener's attention with a journey of crunchy attitude and moments of ragged grace" -
E. E Mason, Discorder, Vancouver

Thank you very much for letting me know, Priya. As you say, I'm ptetty sure the ankle bells you used are like the ones in the southern Romanian dance I mentioned in my blog. They are worn on traditional outfit there and I think they are alike in the Morris Dance as well. I'm now trying to think of a possible migration pattern that brought them from south India to southern Romania as well. Gipsies used to use them as bear cub necklaces for bear cub dances, if you can imagine a bear cub tamed for such a purpose in the very distant past.

If not, then, again, as you say, they must be very old indeed as an instrument and was spreaded from one original area to others, so it's a treasure, actually. Please keep using them. They add a feeling of a ritualistic, ancient, genuine tradition. And it's part of what seems to be your very own niche in the local scene and not only.

Again, with your exceptional coordination, sometimes on doing four such different things at a time, worries about the status of the muscle should be overcome.
:)

Thank you very much for accepting me too among your friends. Glad to have seen you opening for Peter Hammill last Tuesday night at Toronto's Phoenix Concert Theatre.

I included this in my blog entry "The [...] Singer" of Oct 15th. Sorry I first got your first name wrong there (my fault) but I corrected myself with the next blog entry "How I Greeted [...]" after people who attended Peter Hammill's last night's last show of this tour at Hamilton's Pepper Jack Cafe told me about you. And this is how I finally managed to find you on MySpace.
Thanks again!
