"PRO-BLACK SHEEP"

LOGLINE: Character-driven satirical drama about a young, extraordinarily intellectual “black activist” wannabe who is discovered as the political critic sending out anonymous emails that criticize today’s black leadership. Instead of holding it against him, the black leader who finds him out hires his worst critic as a second adviser.

Rashad (Alfred E. Rutherford), an extraordinary intellectual and unemployed black activist wannabe, is feeling dejected these days. His fiancée Tamika (Ellie Foumbi), a lawyer and an aspiring judge, is fed up with his black radicalism and kindly puts him out of her Manhattan condo. She's concerned that they are heading in two totally different directions. With no place to go, Rashad reestablishes residence with his mother in the housing projects but ends up at his Jewish friend Lazer's (Michael Bernstein) house for the night. Upon arrival, Rashad walks in on a meeting taking place with the Urban/PUSH Alliance, a real black activist organization that Lazer serves as counsel.

After overhearing their plot to protest the NYPD on behalf of a known murderer from Rashad's projects, Rashad writes Reverend Blunton (Willie Hill), head of the organization, a strongly worded, anonymous email denouncing their efforts. Lazer detects Rashad's voice behind the email and connects him with Blunton, who offers Rashad a job as his second adviser. Hesitant at first, Rashad seeks out his old high school teacher Mr. Duke (Keith Stone) who offers some insight on Blunton in exchange for Rashad volunteering as a tutor for one of his failing students named Tyrone (Tracy Mazyck). Rashad accepts both jobs.

But what was supposed to be a lucrative position ushering him into the forefront of black activism, along with an unpaid job at helping to mold one of today's misguided youths, turns out to be a journey awakening him to his own need to be true to himself. He tries to use both of his new jobs as an opportunity to express his sincere views about issues but those views are deemed unpopular in the black community, contradicting Rashad's apparent extreme black empowerment.

His biggest fear is realized when his views make him look like a closeted conservative and a sellout by the people around him. So, Rashad tries to bury his feelings deep down under a facade of black extremism, becoming part of 'the problem.'

However, an unexpected tragedy as a result of actions committed by Rashad and the Alliance forces him to finally take a stand. He must dare to be true to himself if he wants to make a real difference in his own life and the lives of others.

    Director's Statement

I bought and read a book titled “Enough,” by Juan Williams in 2006. It was a great read, obviously inspired by Bill Cosby’s famous and controversial speech at the NAACP gala celebrating the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in the Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka. At the time, I was celebrating the birth of my first child, mourning the death of my best friend and was desperately thinking of ways to get my desired career as a filmmaker off the ground while dealing with feelings of abandonment and loneliness. My family needed me to get my act together. There was no time to waste with safe, easy to execute film projects. I remained optimistic while finding fortuitous inspiration in Williams' thought provoking book about phony leaders, dead-end movements and a culture of failure that undermine Black America. Before finishing the book, I started imagining a young black man sharing the views of Cosby and Williams, but being ostracized as a “sellout” in the black community for that. I envisioned his deepest fear of being cast out as a “closeted conservative,” a fear so strong that he works too hard at being “blacker than the blackest” black man. Then I thought, “Is there a story here?”

While writing the screenplay for “Pro-Black Sheep,” a title I had before the script, I found myself wanting to tell a story that inspired individualism through dramatic satire. All too often we get caught up in the mob mentality or following the masses. We see this in the current United States presidential election. These days, it seems as if thinking outside the box can cost you everything. I wanted to show how we must dare to be true to ourselves if we want to make a real difference in our own lives and the lives of others.

"Enough" redirected me to other sources for research. Through facts and figures, I found myself wanting a representative from as many aspects of the struggle as the story can handle: the black elitist in the upper class, the single parent in the ghetto, the regretful hooligan, the resented, guilt-ridden white man wanting to help, the phony black leader, the dedicated, unappreciated high school teacher and the student flunking out. The more I developed the characters and the further I mapped out the main character's journey, the more the story started coming to life with its own voice.

We had no money but were determined to shoot the micro-budgeted film. We decided on August 24, 2007 as the first day of production. We were within days of this date and still didn’t have all the actors, locations and the rest of the budget needed to complete the projected seventeen day production. Crew people were quitting on us. Despite all of this, we persevered and wrapped production on time. The many positives that happened for us, and the little ironies, made me recognize something bigger than us was at work, ushering this film into fruition.
