From the Desk of Luis Pedron (Director)
Last August 2005, we had a great opportunity to have worked in the promotion of the US Premiere of La Visa Loca starring Ricky Davao. Ricky Davao who flew in for a few weeks in NYC, is actually an A List Actor from the Philippines (dubbed as the Robert De Niro of the Philippines). He has won numerous acting awards including: Film Academy of the Philippines Awards for Best Supporting Actor for Ipaglaban Mo and Best Actor awards from FAMAS, Gawad Urian and Star Awards for Saranggola in 2000. He agreed to do our simple project. I told him this will be a No Budget, experimental film with the unique concept that it will be shot in Still Pictures and edited in Final Cut PRO as a short silent film. I was nervous and excited of the idea that he might say yes.. The artist that he is, he jumped into the idea, so one 3 hour afternoon in August we shot this short in my apartment with my parents Louie and Flor Pedron and my buddies Antonio Alvaira (as actor) and Jude Tan who was our photographer utilizing his Hi tech Still Camera. Ricky was so patient with us and allowed us to complete the project. Every now and then he would put his two cents. We were all ears to listen to his words of wisdom. All the while I thought that whole afternoon was a dream..
As a no budget film, it took me months and months to find someone who will do the job for nothing ( and someone I can trust with this material ). Then came Sherwin Morada, a fresh graduate from NY Film Academy but has won an award already for his DP and Editing work for his short film Suitcase. He agreed to it and with a few adjustments we came up with this 8 minute short out of the approximately 200 still pictures.
Now, getting a Royalty Free Music was out of the question for this project, as we want it to be all original and special. I begged my friend, ASCAP and Grammy member, composer and singer Archie Dairocas. Agreeing to our no budget idea, he jumped into the project, as he got excited working with a short film starring Ricky Davao. After a couple of weeks he came up with the original sound track. I wanted to ask him if he had some original song of his that fit the ending of the film. Coincidentally he had a song composed by him but written by his friend Grethel Bolandrina which had a spiritual feel to it and is aptly entitled Awaken. We want Rickys character to come to a point in his life to Awaken to the realities of life so the song is a perfect match for our ending credits.
Now that the project is completed we want to present this as a short that everybody can relate to. All of us have dealt with Family dramas and dilemmas. What we want to remind everyone is, our family is there to support us, but at a certain point, no one can help YOU out the MOST, but YOURSELF. |
