There is a mental picture that is formed when you tell someone that you are from the infamous Compton, California. The city we have come to associate with gang warfare and a few iconic rappers sprinkled in between turf lines. But, these days, something new is brewing in the “CPT” and he goes by the name of Problem. As he puts it, Problem, born Jason Martin, represents Compton 4000. Long gone are the bandanas and creased Dickies pants. Swag on point, a more fitted look matched with a mission to revolutionize the reputation of an entire city.
Born overseas in Germany and raised in Compton, California hails twenty-three year old rapper Problem. Once relegated to the duties of in-house producer for his crew, Problem emerged from behind the boards to become the standout entertainer amongst them. As he began to showcase the talent unleashed through his pen there was no question where the crew’s focus would be placed. For the past seven years Problem has been taking time to hone his craft while lending writing credits to artists such as Snoop Dogg and The Game.
Now seasoned and ready to make power moves in the music industry, Problem never misses an opportunity to capture his creativity. He carries his laptop and Mbox with him at all times. “I’m a walking studio,” he declares, before breaking into an impromptu verse. There is something new and fresh about his delivery. As he describes his style, “it’s everywhere, my music is running away from the typical gangster elements that you think I am supposed to be about.” Staying true to this uniqueness, Problem reveals that his dream collaboration would involve a beat by Stevie Wonder and Ron Isley on the hook. Definitively, he is bringing, “Compton out the box.”
After building a worthy street buzz and selling massive units of his mixtape on the streets of California, Problem is establishing himself as the bridge between industry veterans such as Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, The Game and a new generation of up-and-comers. His successful mixtape projects such as the Dow Jones hosted Deal or No Deal mixtape has stamped the self proclaimed “lyrical assassin” as the hometown hero, garnering radio airplay on Los Angeles’ biggest stations, Power 106 and the now reformatted 93.5 KDay. Reaching down to San Diego’s Z90, Problem has an ever-increasing audience that spans past traditional rap heads. His extensive life travels have taken him across the US picking up distinctive style elements along the way, while his own dynamic personality allows him to reach a younger and wider audience. Hardly commercial, he’s bringing accessibility back to authentic rap music.
Fresh out of a disappointing major record label deal, Problem is now seasoned and positioned to officially release his debut album. Undeterred by his former label’s lack of vision and promotion, he is now the first offering being put out by the joint venture of Derang Ent! and U Can Fly Holdings. Ran by longtime music industry executives, Problem now has the proper machine to propel his project and a team that is causing noise at night clubs and radio stations across the nation with the certified street banger, “I’m Tore Up.” With a career that is blazing on the fast track, there is only one thing left to be said, a Problem is coming your way.
