Interests

  • General

teachings, civics, hamsters, hip hop music and culture
  • Music

Afrika Bambaata, Public Enemy, Run DMC, Wu Tang Clan, A Tribe Called Quest, Dre. Dre, Digital Underground, Snoop, The Roots, Erik B & Rakim, De La, Tupac, Ice Cube, Outkast, N.W.A., Jay Z, Notorious B.I.G., Nas, I have a secret soft spot for Luther Vandross... really the list just goes on and on...
  • Movies

I love old westerns as well as pretty much anything with Tom Hanks in it. I really admire the epic beauty of "Gone with the Wind". Also "Breakin'" and "Wild Style" are really classics.
  • Television

Tradings Spaces (!!!), I like many old sitcoms in re-runs like Welcome Back Kotter, The Golden Girls, Full House, Perfect Strangers, Mister Belvedere. They don't really make television like that, anymore! I enjoy occasional game shows as well.

  • Heroes

there are so many every day heroes. John F Kennedy, Abraham Lincoln, MLK, Erik B & Rakim are also very big influences.

About me:

Umm. I'm not exactly sure why I'm on this thing. For some strange reason, you can purchase small portraits of me at Marty's Sock Puppet Portrait Online Emporium

I am a dedicated middle school Civics Professor. For the most part, my work is my life. I really like to go on long walks (though not in the winter!), spend time with my two hamsters, study up on Civics (the learning never ends!), and watching marathons of Trading Spaces is a real guilty pleasure of mine.

I am also a big fan of the Hip Hop music that many of my kids are now enjoying. It makes me happy to see the kids get involved in such a special body of music - every time I can share Public Enemy's 'It Takes a Nation...' with a fresh-faced 7th grader, my heart soars. Sometimes, after class (or occasionally during very special occasions like birthdays!), I'll blast some fly "jimmy-jammies" from my rather accomplished vinyl collection.

Occasionally when students stay late, they will "drop some beats," over which I enjoy "freestyling". They seem to enjoy my various improvisations, particularly as they are so richly informed by the vast hip hop/civics tapestry that is still unravelling as we speak, listen, and learn.

Who I'd like to meet:

Though my schedule is very demanding and my teaching always comes before all else, I am always interested in making friends. Other civics and hip hop enthusiasts are more than welcome!

Being a single man, I would welcome a beautiful fellow learner to share my life with, as well.

Hey Professor, I was just wondering if I could get back my copy of "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" that I lent you a few months ago. I mean, it's no big deal or anything. I know you still have "The Godfather" as well, but it's okay, don't worry too much about it, I was just saying, you know. Anyway, keep it real, and all that. I'm sure I'll see you around.
