ABOUT SUPER8 FILM STOCK
Kodak is the only supplier who is still making super8 film cartridges. Rolls
of film come in 50ft cartridges that snap in easily - no fancy loading
techniques. Each roll is about 2.5 to 3 minutes of screen time.
There are currently two types of BLACK AND WHITE reversal (positive image)
film stock available:
1) Tri-X (160/200 ASA) - for shooting with less light, this film is grainier
2) Plus-X ( 80/100 ASA) - for shooting in brightly lit situations, has finer
grain
There is only one type of COLOUR reversal available:
1) Ektachrome (64T) - this film requires a brightly lit situation, has vibrant
colours and fine grain
There are two types of COLOUR negative film available, but this requires a
transfer to video to reverse the image to positive:
1) Vision 200T - requires more light, finer grain than 500T
2) Vision 500T - can shoot in very low light, very grainy
PROCESSING SUPER8 FILM
Hand-processing:
If you are shooting with BLACK AND WHITE film, Project8 offers free workshops
through the Purple Thistle to help you process your own film in a darkroom.
Please be advised that the chemicals used in this process can be harmful to
those with sensitivities, and those breast-feeding or pregnant.
Lab processing:
1) Northwest Imaging is NO LONGER processing super8 film.
2) Forde Labs in Seattle
(now taken over by Alpha Cine) will process all currently available super8 film stock (COLOUR negative or
reversal, and BLACK AND WHITE).
3) Exclusive Film and Video in Toronto will process colour and black and white reversal (no negative).
Turn-around time could be around one week for any of these labs, so plan
accordingly.
