In the Summer of 2007, Creative Loafing Media asked some of the artists in the Tampa Bay community to help them repaint distribution boxes for the magazine. As the project developed, it became clear that in addition to refurbishing a few pieces of metal, the concept touched closely on many other facets of life in the Bay Area.
The goal of Project Re:Cover is to raise awareness about recycling (not only waste, but building materials), green politics, green businesses, hybrid cars, graffiti art, recycled audio (DJ/Mixtape culture), fashion, voting, blogging, youth culture and global consciousness.
In October, Tampa artist Jay Giroux re:covered the first box at the Channelside "Save the Arts" Festival. Next up will be Downtown St. Pete. - four boxes down Central Ave. painted to reflect the four elements (earth, air, fire and water). Stay tuned for more photos and a Bay Area map of where the boxes are located.
