About me:
Welcome to ProKanDo!
ProKanDo is a pro-woman, pro-choice political action committee in Kansas. We seek out, promote and raise money to support pro-choice candidates who are willing to serve at the state level and eventually at the national level. Additionally, we educate voters about candidates so they can make informed voting decisions that will protect their reproductive freedom.
During the legislative session, ProKanDo lobbies the state legislature in support of bills that protect the reproductive rights of women, while working to defeat any harmful legislation that would potentially turn back the clock on women’s rights.
What is ProKanDo?
ProKanDo is a state political action committee that was founded in 2002 to help elect pro-choice candidates to all levels of state office. During the 2002 election cycle, the office of the Governor faced an open seat. With a radically anti-choice Republican candidate and a proven pro-choice Democratic candidate both running for the seat, ProKanDo focused much of its efforts on educating voters of what was at stake in November. Those efforts proved successful as Democrat Kathleen Sebelius was elected the 44th Governor of the State of Kansas.
Due in part to its far reaching success, ProKanDo is continuing its efforts to not only elect pro-choice candidates to office, but to also motivate the pro-choice public within the state to encourage their own legislators to pass legislation which will protect reproductive freedom.
While Kansas fortunately has a pro-choice governor, it still faces an anti-choice majority in the House, and a Senate that often votes in favor of anti-choice bills. In addition, the state Attorney General, elected to his first term in 2002, is a radically anti-choice fundamentalist who ran on a platform that promised to limit reproductive freedom. Because of these factors, a grassroots effort to change the way reproductive choice is viewed and expressed within the state is so vital.
Why is Reproductive Choice in Kansas So Important to the Rest of the United States?
Wichita, Kansas is home to one of few clinics in the United States that specializes in late termination of pregnancy for fetal abnormalities and maternal health risk. In addition to providing a rare and vital service, Women’s Health Care Services is also at the forefront in assisting low-income women to obtain services. What makes this clinic so special is that is that it not only serves patients within the Kansas, but assists women from all over the United States and beyond.
The anti-choice movements in Kansas and across the country have made it a priority to eliminate Women’s Health Care Services. They have tried many tactics to accomplish this task: bombings and shootings, threats, protests and most recently, legislation that would place even tighter restrictions on abortion clinics than already currently exist. If this movement is successful, reproductive choices will not only cease to be available for the women in the state of Kansas, but its doors will be closed to women all across the world who seek assistance.
