Tristan James is a dynamic and intense performer that incorporates many musical styles into an original and captivating audio/visual experience. Listeners will be captivated by traces rock, jazz, trip hop, and salvaged relics of UK garage, drum and bass, and industrial music.
Tristan, 25, was born in Canada and has lived in London, LA, Memphis, St. Louis, and Chicago. Tristan grew up in the rave scene performing throughout the Midwest. As a kid, his clashes with the law drove him into politics and social awareness. He grew determined to get an education at any cost. He is now a classically trained musician/composer and also has a bachelor's degree in audio and engineering and a graduate degree in arts management. Thanks to his past influences and study of politics, philosophy, and music, Tristan now strives to provide entertainment as a revolutionary artist and writer, while spreading the message of liberation and creating real social change.
Tristan James is also a founding member and artist at Proletariat Productions, Chicago's socially conscious record label.
Tristan also helps manage an online music journal called United Front and publishes a globally distributed PodCast. He interviews musicians, artists, activists and others, in an attempt to understand and promote the revolutionary artists movement.
Ecclesiastes
Syntax creates charged hip-hop composed of a mixture of rapid paced lyrical flow with smooth melodic riffs, heavy harmonic rounds and guttural vocals. Listeners will hear a combination of rythmic soul and Blues creatively intertwined with hip-hop beats.
Varrick Douglas is co-founder of Proletariat Productions. As both a producer and a recording artist under the pseudonyms Ecclesiastes and Syntax, he strives to fulfill the record label’s mission of creating revolutionary music that inspires social change.
His debut album “A Cryptic Gospel” (available for download on iTunes and in the Proletariat Productions Store) has received international attention as it continues to generate public interest with its soulful hip-hop sounds and hard-hitting charged lyrics. He is currently working on a new album that will be released in early 2009.
Founded by Tristan James and Varrick Douglas, Proletariat Productions is a community based record label committed to producing progressive quality music of all genres. As an independent label, our goal is to create music that inspires social change. We are dedicated to making music that breaks barriers both in content and form.
We record, produce, promote, and distribute the music of artists who are dedicated to social change. We do not release music that can be perceived as misogynistic, racist, sexist, homophobic, or elitist. We are dedicated to producing music that allows freedom of expression within these boundaries and we are willing to take risks to benefit artists who have a passion for positive social change. All genres of music are welcome for review.
Mission
We are a people’s record label established to give voice to alternative political and musical artistic expression. As both activists and artists, our mission is to create music that not only enlightens people, but inspires action.
Vision
The vision of Proletariat Productions is to cultivate, through arts and activism, a broad revolutionary cultural movement to bring forward a radically better and different society.
In early October I wrote one of my latest songs called, “Wall Street Bail Out Blues.” Within four days of writing it, a video crew captured me playing it on the street at Seattle’s Pike Place Market and posted their video on YouTube. That video has now reached the attention of a writer for The Wall Street Journal who is writing an article about those who have written songs about our tough economic times. His article will be published this week and I’m excited to read it.
Who knows where this might lead? Call me an optimist but I have a feeling that this could mean that a few more seconds of that elusive fifteen minutes of fame might be coming my way.
It ain’t the cover of the Rolling Stone but it’s not every day that a writer from a major worldwide news outlet seeks me out to talk to me about my songwriting. That’s a huge validation of my efforts at staying true to my vision. I must be doing something right.

BOOG005 Lucius Lowe - Feeling the groove EP - JUNO EXCLUSIVE!
01. Feel the groove 02. Keep off the grass 03. Tuck n Tan 04. More.....
Four tracks of deep, smooth luscious house grooves from Lucius (not luscious!) Lowe. The title track "Feel the groove" is just perfect for chilling and flowing with the vibe, the seminal "Keep off the grass" takes things way deeper with a deep rhodes sound and haunting brass/sax riffs. "Tuck n tan" - dedicated to Lucius' two eldest sons Tucker and Tanner, livens the pace up with a summery, classic house piano melody and funky bass/clavinet riffs. The EP closes with one of Lucius' oldest deep house piano tracks "More..." (circa 2002) - Ever pulled in a club, made it home then lost the plot at the worst possible moment? Listen on.....
