According to the dictionary, Prolix means [to talk or write] ‘at great length’. Taking that depiction and running with it like a crazy kid with a pair of scissors, Chris McCarthy thought it made an appropriate moniker for a man who, at 6’7”, has an impressively lengthy stature. However, it’s his music that speaks volumes and, since 2005, Prolix has been making massive statements with his own blend of high-octane drum & bass.
Having been a big rock and metal fan during his teens, Prolix had taken up the guitar and played in bands, but eventually made the passage into electronic music through artists such as The Prodigy, Orbital and Aphex Twin. It wasn’t long before the bug to sequence his own tracks and the similar levels of passion and excitement between rock and drum & bass pushed Prolix into following the production path.
Hooking up with Noisia through an online music sharing community in 2004, Prolix made several trips to Holland to work on tunes with the boys. The results of these collaborative efforts came out on Mayhem’s Shadow Law Recordings and Stakka’s label, Cargo. After these early successes Prolix began to hone his studio skills and another collaboration with Nocturnal was quickly snapped up by Renegade Hardware. ‘Crater’ is the track that acted as a turning point for a fresh faced artist who was soon to be remixing Chase & Status’ ‘Barbarian’ for the ‘Ten Tonne’ EP and catching the ear of the one they call DJ Hype.
With Hype and Pascal liking the twisted beats and mangled basslines emanating from Prolix’ studio, it was decided they wanted to sign this relatively new talent exclusively. But with the predominant output of Ganja being jump up, it was decided that a whole new imprint would need to be created for Prolix, and similar artists. Thus Ganja-Tek was born and Prolix’ career cemented into the annals of drum & bass history. 'Exile' b/w ‘Chokehold’ was the first release on the label, picked up by everyone who appreciates the darker side of life including Bailey and BBC Radio 1’s Mary Anne Hobbs; while subsequent releases have been bashing the living daylights out of hordes of ravers across the globe in the sets of some of the scene’s most respected DJs.
Having quit his full time job and moved to London to pursue music, Prolix admits he’s taken a huge step forward both musically and productively. With his studio setup running smoothly, some fresh monitors and enough time on the day to day to get into the studio and work on tracks and techniques, it’s clear to see that the future is bright for Prolix and Ganja-Tek.
