Originally an instrumental outfit, Proper Jive formed in early 2001 to explore various facets of funk, jazz and dance music. Proper Jive's sound is influenced by a variety of styles, including jazz grooves from Wes Montgomery and Lee Morgan, the funkadelic fusion of Herbie Hancock in the '70s, jazz-jam icons Medeski Martin and Wood, and Galactic, and the electronic-laden soundscapes of St. Germain and Kinky.
Grown out of the vibrant music community of San Diego, California, Proper Jive projects the energy and the diversity of the environment on which it formed. Proper Jive has the ability to capture audiences in a variety of settings - from bars to coffeehouses, college campuses and private parties, art exhibitions and public events, the eclectic nature of their sound always provides an engaging experience.
Proper Jive’s core members consist of Kevin Parson on guitar, Fausto Ruiz on trumpet, Justin Pires on keys, Andrew Hekman on bass, and James Bailey on drums, each with a unique background ranging from classical to jazz, blues, funk and rock.
Proper Jive has collaborated with numerous talented performers from the San Diego scene, including multi-instrumentalist Paul Horn, old-school icon Tom Panella, and our very own Kelly Morris.
Kelly Morris has been singing, writing and producing material with Proper Jive since Fall of 2002, helping the Proper Jive core in creating an entire set of soulful, funk-heavy, R&B style grooves. Her voice quality has been compared to Alicia Keys, Ani DiFranco, Norah Jones and Janis Joplin.
The dynamic and combustible nature of Proper Jive is best captured during a live performance.
