   About PROVIDENCE SLAM
Providence Slam is one of the oldest and most respected national Poetry Slam venues. Known for bringing quality, consistent work to regional/national poetry events and for a strong community built around it's home venue of AS220, The Providence Slam Team won the National Poetry Slam in 1996, hosted Nationals in 2000, and has advanced passed the qualifying round at The National Poetry Slam 8 times in the passed 11 years.

It's the objective of this venue to maintain and provide a space where individuals, whether they consider themselves artists or not, can come to share and learn from one another. Writiers, singers, musicians, carpenters, doctors, janitors, lawyers, and waitresses; we are not defined by our job titles. Everyone is welcome at the Providence Slam.

Bring flyers for community events and actions. We will post and announce them. Bring your songs, poems, and rants. The stage is open to you.

Bring your ears, anger, smiles, and tears. You will hear some of the consistently highest quality spoken word in the country.

Our venue is AS220. We are blessed to have an art/community action fortress as our home court. They provide for and protect our reading without trying to profit or change us and we are lucky unspeakably lucky to be here.
Check them out.

Our reading is at AS220 EVERY THURSDAY!!

Thanks for friendship! Words ought to be a little wild, for they are the assaults of thoughts on the unthinking. John Maynard Keynes.

RHODE ISLANDERS TO PROTEST 5 YEARS OF WAR AND OCCUPATION

On March 19, Rhode Islanders will mark the end of the fifth year of the war on Iraq with a march through downtown Providence followed by a rally on the mall side of the State House. At 4:00 pm, participants will gather at Burnside Park , where the march will form and move toward the headquarters of weapons manufacturer, Textron. The march will also pass two military recruiting offices.

These actions are sponsored by the RI Spring Mobilization Committee, a coalition of community, faith-based, and political groups. Members of the Committee are willing to share their views on the war and the March 19 actions. Some will deliver brief statements at the rally after the march. The following comments capture some of the reasons for this protest.

Groups endorsing these actions are: American Friends Service Committee(SENE), Rhode Island Community Coalition for Peace, Workers International League, Rhode Island Unitarian-Universalists for Social Justice, Providence Branch of the International Socialist Organization, MoveOn( East Bay ), Operation Iraqi Freedom(Brown Student org.), Green Party of RI, South Kingstown Justice and Peace Advocacy, and East Bay Citizens for Peace.

There will be actions all week in D.C. Major actions this weekend and next weekend. March 19th is generally considered the anniversary of the invasion. Iraq Veterans Against the War have been holding Winter Soldier testimonials from Iraq Vets in D.C. since thursday and will continue doing so all weekend long, link to podcasts here: http://ivaw. org/wintersoldier

I'll be going to the march and protest here in Milwuakee tomorrow and a small action in St. Louis this Wednesday, March 19th.

Check UnitedforPeaceandJustice. org or internationalanswer. org to find the demonstration in your area.

Disgracing my Blackness

Wild Nights and forgotten thoughts
Live only in my past
I am no longer that woman
That child, in a time oh surpassed.

What triumphs I have conquered
That I leave in the dark
From a life I shouldn’t have lived
A styled I shouldn’t have embarked

Along such weary feelings,
That sponge my clouded being
With cantankerous attitudes
With no befriended guaranteeing

I block the mango, the rice, and potatoes
And bask only in the melon
Because I fret the mockers,
Who judge my people as being convicted felons

They say I’m much too sensitive
to the jokes the mockers spout
so my hopes seem like troubled feelings
and not Black wishes to devout

My fathers’ people have been hated
Forced in fields to pick the cotton
And promised 40 acre, a mule for being
Tortured, humiliated, raped, and forgotten

So YES, I am ashamed of not standing up for my roots
Of going out and disgracing my Blackness
Being a figure in the night, degrading social classes
And for not standing up and attacking the masses

Happy Holidays! Keep Writing!!!! FROM DEBORLEE

The Happiest Day-The Happiest Hour

My sear'd and blighted heart hath known,

The highest hope of pride and power,

I feel hath flown.

And, pride, what have I now with thee?

Another brow may even inherit

The venom thou hast pour'd on me

Be still, my spirit!

The happiest day- the happiest hour

Mine eyes shall see- have ever seen,

The brightest glance of pride and power,

I feel- have been:
But were that hope of pride and power

Now offer'd with the pain

Even then I felt- that brightest hour

I would not live again:

For on its wing was dark alloy,

And, as it flutter'd- fell

An essence- powerful to destroy

A soul that knew it well.
