About me: It all started back in 1992,during the days of the Drome and the Bassment in Birkenhead. Being from this town and going to these events gave me the feel of the hard dance scene but especially when I started to go to events such as kinetic it became a fever and I was addicted to raving, the music and the atmosphere...but that wasn’t enough for me...so I moved onto trying to be on a higher level..DJ'ing...I got my first pair of Decks when I was still in high school, I couldn’t tell you what they were they were just Decks to me at the time...but I do remember one of them had a 78RPM setting on it. Woo.
I started off mixing retro and Italian house back in the day on my pair of "turntables" (even though one of them had pitch adjustment on it...hmm.) but it was by far good enough for me at the time...from then on I was hooked..addicted.couldnt get enough. But I don’t know if it was the music at the time or the rush of mixing two different records together and doing my own thing with the music...it was almost like I was making my own music, with everybody else’s records.
My first event was called Pow Wow and I went back to back with Jackson Q (Resident of the Bassment) and that was the first time I used technics 1200's..wow it felt so much different using them, it brought a new world of djing to me, I played a selection of old classics that were the cutting edge of "Hardcore" at the time for example...shoop 6-8 and early evolution and Ramirez.. anything fresh, different, bouncy and with a pumping Hardcore kick!
Three words...."It went off" everyone loved it and went mental, Jackson even commented on this new style of hardcore I was playing. This is fond memory of mine in my career.
Following this momentous event for me, I got my first residency at "The Ford Youth Club" otherwise known as "DE Estate",I suppose at the time I was 'Hardcore' but looking back it compared to Ratty material, Dark D'N'B and break beats galore.
I managed to get my hands on the odd "Banging" Tune, that Carl Cox would Pioneer the sound of regularly, but that type of music was like gold dust to get your hands on the pressed wax...until the times of Seeds Records..
This was about 1994...a while back...I cant remember now...due to the fact iam getting on now...getting my pension soon...well actually 30 soon. I remember my first tune was evolution 1....Bouncy Techno. Equation part 3.It was beastie anyways.
From then on came the birth of next gen, blatent beats, all the mile stones of hardcore as we know it. And with it came the Booking and DJ work for me...unfortunately soon after my flat got burgled and all my records got stolen. A substantial amount and that disheartened me and made me feel like giving up on it all. But im strong and didn’t get as far as giving it up...I started to slowly, painfully and fecking expensively replace all my stolen vinyl. Even though I never managed to replaced the lot.
Anyway around 2002 I managed to get hold of the holy grail to DJ's known as the Technics 1210's..they were black.sexy..and changed the way I dj'ed..my old decks felt like toys compared. Cheap nasty toys...in fact not even toy grade. Just like something from poundland (yes we have a shop called poundland in Wirral..)
After that my style of DJ'in change round to flawless and smooth mixing and blending due to the fact of me practising and how good the Turntables were. A whole new dimension
After I got hold of these turntables I went on a record buying mission, buyin everything in site that was hardcore and had a kicking beat like no other music out there, the music that kept me going, that kept me fully hardcore.
I discovered a website called ukscene.info where I made a few friends and learnt a bit more about the scene, and soon enough the website had a dj comp which I entered, and got through to the final. My confidence grew from here on and made me a better DJ...which leads on to where I stand today...A rare breed. A genuine and honest DJ that gets his bookings through talent alone, no arse kissing...just a combo of genuine hard work, talent and commitment.
