Psallite was formed in 1993 with the intention of performing a capella music from the past. the original repertoire consisted of music produced from traditional choral groups, and arrangements developed by the group from the City Waites and Tam-Lin. Their first official performance was at the second Fairbridge Festival in 1994, and Psallite has maintained a strong link with Fairbridge over the last ten years.
Psallite has performed at Fairbridge, Nannup and Balingup festivals, combined with Trio Grosso to create and perform medieval concert shows and performed at early music events throughout the state and at the National Folk Festival in Canberra in 2007.
In addition, the group has arranged its own concert performances with Claremont Cottesloe and Fremantle councils, and produced 2 CD's of their favorite pieces from the first 1500 years of western civilization.
Over the years Psaliite has developed a wide range of music and styles, from ancient to modern, including music from the church and from the street. One of the features of their performances is this wide range, from English, Latin, French, Spanish and Italian languages, and sometimes combinations of the lot. Psallite has become actively involved in the research into the music and performing styles from medieval times. As often there are no definitive recordings and arrangements of the music, the group has created their own in the style to which they believe may have originally performed. In essence, they believe music should be fun, interesting and should move the audience - a factor reflected in their performances.
The groups performing style has also developed from a fairly sedate choral style to include Action," Argumonics", props, costumes and a variety of well researched medieval instruments, such as the Plumpett and the Bum fiddle.
