I started Ioniphonic when I learned and became interested in the idea of live PA performance of psychedelic trance and goa music. All tracks are composed and performed live PA using no software. Hardware has a certain quality about it that gives the artist more control over their music. This is especially important in a live PA situation. I understand it is possible to get all the necissary MIDI controllers for a laptop based setup, however, I like to do things oldschool, and it's easier for me to keep everything in order.
Unless you spend lots of money on a really nice laptop setup, there really is no comparing the sound to the electric organic quality of an analog or even DSP analog synth sound.
