From the harsh inner cities of the Dallas/Ft. Worth area of Texas, a number of brutal Texas death metal and grind core acts arose to make their mark in the history of brutal death metal. Bands like Devourment, Sintury, Viral Load, Insidious Decrepancy, Prophecy, Vitality, Aversion to life, and several others helped mold the foundation of the Texas death metal scene, later known as “TXDM”.
Emerging within this same mold of death metal innovators comes Psychiatric Regurgitation. What initially started as a one man project, featuring Dylan on guitars and vocals with the help of a drum machine, grew throughout the years into a full 5 member assault. With the expansion of the line-up also grew a slight shift in the musical style. In the beginning, Psychiatric Regurgitation was regarded as an “Agoraphobic Nosebleed meets Cryptopsy”-styled band, heavily known for their influence within the fast intensity of early Cryptopsy mixed with the spazz-grind drum machine frenzy of Agoraphobic Nosebleed. The band also fused various other grind-like influences such as Blood Duster, Napalm Death, and Cephalic Carnage yet still kept the guttural vocal style of today’s modern brutal death.
Blending the guttural vocal style with the spastic grind style music became their trademark within the Texas scene which set them apart from the rest of the TXDM bands. Throughout the years, the band releases 2 demos, a Split CD with Semen Across Lips, and a full length album entitled “Vaginal Fluid: The sweet taste of revenge”. As time continued, the drum machine was put to rest, new members were added, and a new focus of sound and style was put into perspective. Today, Psychiatric Regurgitations main influences are centered around a variety of both brutal death and melodic death metal bands ranging from Death and Decrepit Birth to bands like Dying Fetus and Suffocation.
The band has toured the east coast, and is preparing for a west coast tour in late 2008, and hopes for a European tour in 2009 or 2010. Psychiatric Regurgitation is preparing to release their 2nd full length album entitled “Stabbed in the eyes with a crack pipe” which promises to display their new direction fusing the elements of brutal and melodic death metal. Some fans of their older material may be slightly disappointed to the see the band stray from their original spastic grind roots, however the band feels this progression is a positive one that most fans P.R. fans will appreciate. The band will not completely forget where they came from. They do not cater to trendy nu-metal riffs, clean vocals, core-trends, or open note breakdowns. They always have been and always will play fast brutal music. The releasing of “Stabbed in the eyes with a crack pipe” will prove this upon it’s unleashing in late 2008.
