Psychedelic Funkification Project This site is dedicated to the band PSYCHEDELIC FUNKIFICATION PROJECT(PSYFUNK).
PsyFunk came together in the spring of 1994 at the University of Detroit Mercy. The original members had a definite goal: the creation of music to which each member could equally contribute. The band was originally called The Psychedelic Funkification Project but was later shortened to simply ,PsyFunk. Considering the musical backgrounds of the members of the band, ranging from traditional jazz and experimental fusion to Texas and Chicago blues, Afro-Cuban, soul and gospel music, the project, on paper at least, did not have a defining glue. After playing together, though, the band realized that it could all be essentially joined, creating music that one can only describe as honest.
Since 1994, the lineup has expanded from five to nine members, finally including a three-piece horn section, guitar, keys, drums, bass, congas, and vocals. In October of 1996, the band released their first album, "Fresh Dead Fish" on a collectively-owned label, P.F.P. Productions, Inc. The seven songs on the album, all original compositions, show the band's desire and ability to cover several different genres contemporaneously. In 1999, the band released its major full album production, simply titled "PsyFunk". It brought together two soulful and unique singers, Marvin Belton and Tim Rios. The band with these two vocalists truly defined itself as one of a kind. Like any recorded moment, though, these albums are snapshots of a constant musical evolution. A live performance provides irrefutable proof of PsyFunk's dynamic power and inexhaustible energy. In 2000, the members decided to go their separate ways and pursue other aspirations. They still meet from time to time and you may see some of the guys in several projects, on a major stage or even at the local pub. One can only hope that soon they will reunite to give their fans a taste of the past and maybe what is yet to come. In 2007, this hope was realized with the first annual Concert for Noah to benefit the NF Foundation where PsyFunk and all original members performed. Once again, the live show brought back a sound that only PsyFunk can create. .
