Peterborough Trade Union Council was formed in October 1898. According to Tom Browning, in his unpublished history of PTUC, the formal decision was taken at a meeting attended by representatives of the “Amalgamated Society of Engineers; Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners; Operative Society of Bricklayers; Boilermakers; Basket Makers; Coachbuilders and the three local contingents of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants”.
This was a time when the working class was growing in confidence and demanding to have its own, independent voice heard. In 1899, the Trade Union Council began standing Labour candidates in council elections. This, of course, was before the national Labour Party was formed and should serve to remind anyone who doubts it that it was the trade union movement that created the Labour Party as its political voice.
In 1918, Peterborough Trade Union Council formed Peterborough Labour Party.
Who I'd like to meet: Trade unionists, socialists, progressively minded people from all the different communities in Peterborough. Anyone who wants to achieve social justice and equality for all working people. Everyone who thinks that another world is both possible and necessary.

"In my inner life, not only during my school years but throughout my youth, nature and individuals occupied a lesser place than books and ideas. Despite my country bringing-up, I was not sensitive to nature. My interest in it and my understanding of it came in later years, when childhood and even early youth were far behind. For a long time people passed through my mind like random shadows. I looked into myself and into books, in which in turn I tried again to find myself and my future. "
