Drawing on the international sound art collective's fifteen years of sound-based investigations, Ultra-red present School Of Echoes; an encounter organized across multiple levels from encounters between the various investigations that comprise the collective as well as an invitation extended to artists, social movement activists, community organizers, and students. The mission of School Of Echoes is simple, to articulate a practice of militant sound investigation in the very process of learning the practice from each other across multiple political and local contexts.
Recently, School Of Echoes appeared as part of Ultra-red's ten-week residency at the art center Raven Row in London. The residency convened the nine members of Ultra-red for a thematic investigation examining the collective's fifteen years of using sound to investigate anti-racist organizing, the struggles of migration, social housing mobilization, and AIDS activism. Accompanying the thematic inquiry, Ultra-red also organized a multi-session workshop titled the Raven Row Sessions. These sessions brought together sixteen activists and artists to examine the practice of community organizing through collaborative learning where sound and listening are means for producing collective reflection and action. Workshop activities included walking tours of the city; the production of site-specific audio recordings (samples are available on this website); analytical listening to recorded sounds; generating new strategies for collective action; and investigations into the crucial concepts of political process, participation, and political action.
This autumn, Ultra-red will collaborate with nine participants from the Raven Row Sessions (referred to affectionately as Sessionistas or Echologists) in an inquiry into the work of British composer Cornelius Cardew for the symposium "'Cornelius Cardew: Play for Today" (21 and 22 November, ICA) organized by The Drawing Room.

Founded fifteen years ago in Los Angeles, Ultra-red conduct militant sound investigations alongside social justice movements where sound is both the medium and the site of inquiry. While the image determines much of our understanding of activist art, Ultra-red turn the focus to the ear: the sound of communities organizing themselves, the acoustics of contested spaces, the demands and desires in our voices and in our silences, and the echoes of historical memories of struggle. These investigations take the form of audio recordings, art exhibitions, performances, or sound walks. The nine members of Ultra-red have worked with organizations such as the Rural Racism Project (Devon, UK), the autonomous community development organization Union de Vecinos (Los Angeles), the German anti-racist network Kanak Attak, Community HIV/AIDS Mobilization Project (New York/LA), and Woodcraft Rangers which facilitates education programs in sixty-five schools in Los Angeles County.
