New Remix Record "Echolocation" Coming Soon!
Public Record’s 2nd release, “Echolocation”, finds the band in full-on collaboration mode as they join forces with 11 artists/groups of differing musical backgrounds to remix and rethink 5 songs off of the band’s 2008 self-titled debut album from High Two. “Echolocation” boasts an original mixture of artists that should surprise those listeners expecting a typical brand of remix album. Individuals like Guy Picciotto (Fugazi, Rites Of Spring), Alasdair MacLean (The Clientele), Mac McCaughan (Superchunk, Portastatic) & Quentin Stoltzfus (Mazarin) are here remixing for the first time along with seasoned indie veteran Mark Robinson (Unrest, Air Miami) and some promising new/underground acts like A Sunny Day In Glasgow, Collette Columbirch and Arc In Round. The inclusion of Malcolm Ross (Josef K, Orange Juice) should also excite – especially, for those fans of Scottish Postcard pop & 80’s post-punk.
“Echolocation” is an energizing blend of the experimental and presents a surprisingly cohesive collection of separate pieces and ideas. Where most remix albums are acknowledged for few highlights and much disjointedness, Public Record & friends have given us a complete album.

Comfortability – Colette Columbirch Remix

Philadelphian septet, PUBLIC RECORD, blend together a vast array of musical genres ranging from early-disco to shoegaze; Afro-beat to Scottish Postcard pop; and northern soul to Factory Records funk. The product of this co-mingling of musical ideas and sensibilities is a refreshingly creative take on dance music that manages to surprise and bewilder listeners with each changing verse and track. This is not to say that Public Record’s music regularly bombards us with dramatic style shifts or taut genre “stunts.” It is rather that each of the individual components of their instrumentation simultaneously partakes in a complex and subtle play on various styles. It is rare for an instrument to be played in one genre specific manner throughout the course of a whole song and when a stylistic change does take place it can happen in an understated manner or while the listener is being distracted by perhaps more salient elements. As a result, Public Record can be described as a band that chooses to obscure much of its experimental leanings. The genre-bending explorations they make are often hidden in intricacy and familiarity. When it’s all said and done they could be described simply as a pop band or a dance band, but it will be their complexity that will allow listeners to enjoy multiple dimensions otherwise figured to be missing from many groups today.
Public Record was originally formed in Philadelphia in 2001 by Gareth Duffield and Brent Bohan. The group as it stands today is comprised of Gareth Duffield (guitar, keyboards), Brent Bohan (bass), Greg Pavlovcak (guitar), and Hilary Baker (alto saxophone), Ted Johnson (drums, percussion), Matt Lyons (drums, percussion), and Charles Duquesne (drums, percussion).

Public Record "s/t"
Released - 04/08/2008 High Two
"After a long time in the making, Public Record has created a masterful debut album that instantly has established them as one of the best instrumental bands in the U.S. and has set the table for even more innovation in the near future." - Martin Brown, UWISHUNU, April 2008
4 out of 5 stars - Reax Magazine. "The 13 tracks on this self-titled debut evoke an ideology of musicians unwilling to chase a sound, and far more concerned with the alchemy of new creation. Whether it's the evocative, Durutti Column wispiness of "Heavy Ornament," the pounding, semi-Ethiopiques groove of "French Suburb" or the wiry attack of album closer "Comfortability," Public Record is as much about sonic bravery as it is about sweaty fun." - Jason Ferguson, Reax Magazine, May 2008.
"Subtle and well-orchestrated instrumental riffs that don’t fade into the background as comfortable dinner party music. Public Record advertises to those who use music as an entrancing conduit for getting lost inside their own heads as well as those who are prone to shaking hips and shuffling feet." - Maggie Serota, Washington City Paper, Apr. 11 - 17, 2008 (Vol. 28, 15)
"This record is all about versatility, agility, complexity, and diversity. Even though the songs are dance-able, this isn't a vacant pop record. It's rich with jams - both long and short, layered with texture, and engaging - so much so that one could argue that it's anti-pop in all the right ways." - Royce Epstein, Girl About Town, May 2008

"an enjoyable set of instrumentals as primordial as they are melodic, as trance-y as they are dance-y. Their sound is fun and sombre, with the cool mellow of the saxophone mixing with the itchy funk of the guitar and the muscular bass groove. It is simply impossible to categorize the sound, but it’s easy to enjoy. ESG? Blurt? Can? Krakatoa? Like a good stew, there’s a touch of everything in Public Record’s sound."------------

"A proper full-length by Public Record is on the horizon, and expectations are already sky high." - Doug Wallen, Philadelphia Weekly, Aug 2007-------------------http://www.philadelphiaweekly.com/articles/15210
"(Public Record is...) instrumental in this crazy hybrid of Factory Records clackity British funk, old soul dance 45s and Balkan boogie a la early Camper Van Beethoven."-----------
