a scene that finds its home weekly at Denver rock clubs and record stores - including the Hi-Dive and Twist & Shout, which Ben Desoto and Tim Garvey, the boys behind the brand-new Public Service Records, call their second and third homes.
The Wheel is the debut solo recording from Born in the Flood's lead singer Nathaniel Rateliff. Think shades of Leonard Cohen, Nick Drake and Lee Hazelwood. Uncertain songs for uncertain people.
The Westword said: The Wheel's debut, Desire and Dissolving Men, was recorded largely on an eight-track recorder in Rateliff's living room, with some recording, mixing and mastering by Andrew Vastola of Rocky Mountain Recorders. The album is a moving song cycle of longing, languor and lamentation . . . this solo debut is an intimate document of raw honesty and subtle brilliance. The fractured beauty of these twelve tracks quietly demands repeated listens and close examination.
We've put out some other records too. Some are sold out, but others can be purchased using the links below.
"P.S.1" is a well-produced snapshot of a scene that finds its home weekly at Denver rock clubs and record stores - including the Hi-Dive and Twist & Shout, which Ben Desoto and Tim Garvey, the boys behind the brand-new Public Service Records, call their second and third homes.
As a showcase of new Colorado music, PS 2 isn't perfect. But it's closer than anyone's ever come before. Ranging from humble to heavy-hitting, the disc amply displays the passion and attention to detail that Ben De-soto and Tim Garvey of Public Service Records bring to this project -- and to the local indie scene as a whole. Everything from digital noise to folk to garage punk is represented here, and the overall flow and excellence of the selections makes PS 2 much more than just a fervently waved banner for Denver rock: It's also a great listen.

Backbeat writers sound off on the best local releases of 2006.

Cowboy Curse, Nod Up and Down (to the Simulcast Singing). Seasonal Affective Disorder sufferers, take note: Cowboy Curse's debut full-length is like your own private sunbeam. Glowing with mellifluous melodies and harmonies, the trio's whimsical, lo-fi retro-pop is guaranteed to improve your mood immeasurably, even in its less upbeat moments. If there was a more enjoyable local disc released this year, I haven't heard it. -- Herrera

Cowboy Curse, Nod Up and Down (To the Simulcast Singing)
If harmony were irony, the members of Cowboy Curse would be the biggest assholes on earth. Instead, they comprise the best power-pop band in Denver and Nod Up and Down is a masterwork of plush yet cutting melody.
PS3 Various Artists, "PS3"
INDIE ROCK/HIP-HOP|Public Service, released Jan. 9
Because you love music - or because you know somebody who loves music - here's what you should do tomorrow:
Go to the new Twist & Shout record store on East Colfax Avenue and spend $15 - the price of one new CD, right? Try three new CDs - three compilations of local music compiled by the people who know local music. "PS3" is the most recent of these compilations from Public Service Records, and it serves as an updated Colorado music primer, even for those of us who frequent these shows at clubs.
Some of the bands featured on "PS3" have been playing bigger shows - Machine Gun Blues, A Shoreline Dream and Laylights included - but many are still building their crowds. Just a few of the great songs here come from Gregory Alan Isakov & The Freight; Cat-a-Tac; Pee Pee; and A Dog, Paloma. An exceptional newcomer is Bluebook (now known as Bela Karoli), whose smart production is fronted by Julie Davis' snazzy trip-hop vocals. |Ricardo Baca of the Denver Post

We're playing a "Must See Show" at the Walnut Room on Sat. Sept 20th. We're sharing the stage with Matt Morris (produced by Justin Timberlake) and we are extra excited about this show because it is the last one before we hole up for the new album.
Many acres adjacent to the Sanctuary have now been put on the market, and each parcel represents risk for the Sanctuary. The best investment we can make for the Animals is to purchase as much of this acreage as possible before it becomes dozens of 5-acre plots with houses. The cost of one of these sections of land is $300,000, and if we can raise the money for this 80 acre parcel, the owners have agreed to donate $25,000 back as an in-kind contribution. We have put a $5,000 deposit on the land in order to hold it, but the deposit will only tie up the land until March 1, 2008. Time is of the essence, and we need your help to purchase this land! We need to raise an additional $270,000 to make this critical purchase a reality. PLEASE HELP US PROTECT THE ANIMALS' HOME FOR THE FUTURE! IF YOU CAN MAKE A SPECIAL DONATION FOR THIS PURPOSE, IT WOULD MEAN SO MUCH TO US! Also, if you know others who might be interested in helping, please let us know, and we'll be glad to get in touch with them as well. To donate please go to www.wildanimalsanctuary.org or donate at the badge on the left side of the myspace profile near the bottom, before the videos. Please e-mail or instant message with any questions. .... ..<div .." position:relative; top: -140px; left:
