UNDER THE VOLCANO was an underground music fanzine based outta Long Island, and was published six issues a year, starting in 1991. Issues of UNDER THE VOLCANO erupts with music not yet ready for the mainstream, from punk to hardcore to indie and more--you’ll find interviews with your favorite bands n’ personalities, loads of audio reviews and columns. Over the years, everyone from JELLO BIAFRA to BRIDGE NINE RECORDS to BRAND NEW to DROPKICK MURPHYS have been featured in UNDER THE VOLCANO.
Over the years, writers for UNDER THE VOLCANO have gone on to contribute to publications as diverse as MAXIMUM ROCKNROLL, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY and THE NEW YORK TIMES.
Some contributors included TESCO VEE of THE MEATMEN, PAUL LEMOS of noisemongers CONTROLLED BLEEDING, and members of RADIO 4, MDC, TWO MAN ADVANTAGE and many other bands you’ve probably heard of.
UNDER THE VOLCANO also published HORROR GARAGE, an award-winning horror lit mag (now a webzine) that mixes original dark fiction with underground music and a psychotronic vibe. We also sporadically release records like SOMETHING IN THE WATER: A SECRET HISTORY OF LONG ISLAND PUNK on a tiny label named WINGED DISK; look for some label news later in 2008. We can also help you with printing your own zine at ZINEPRINTING.COM.
Alas, at this point, yes, we’ve stopped publishing a print version of UNDER THE VOLCANO, but hope to expand the website at some point in the future...after taking a long, long nap.
