One of my earliest memories of childhood is of the day my grandmother bought me two wooden Ventriloquist figures of Edgar Bergen's Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd. Well, those two wooden dummies planted the seed and the rest as they say, is history.
I decided to figure out how the genius Ventriloquist Edgar Bergen made these beautifully crafted Ventriloquist puppets move and come to life, and nothing was going to stop me.
Now back then there weren't many books on the subject or even the convenient google search we have today, so I would make sketches of these characters and try and use whatever I could get my hands on to build a Charlie McCarthy of my own. Well, with lots of patience and many blocks of wood I succeeded, and was very disappointed with the final results, but it was also precious as an experience.
So then I decided to dive into the world of hand puppets, where I found many ways of twisting foam into very interesting shapes and forms. I would go out and snatch some contact cement from my father's workbench and bend together all kinds of head shapes until I was satisfied with the overall look. Needless to say, I haven't stopped cutting and sewing, and I only grow to love it more and more everyday.
Jim Henson and his wonderful Muppets are prime examples of what puppetry can add to the world, and Jim Henson certainly made an impact that has changed the way we look at puppets today. Yes, he proved that they were for children and how puppets can teach kids their ABC's and 123's, but he also knew that they weren't just for kids, but could be prime-time entertainment for the grown-ups as well.
