PURAVIDA 2003-2009
____________________________________
Puravida was originally formed in the summer of 2003 by singer-songwriter Nick Roll on vocals and guitar and Colombian maestro conguero Marco Vinicio Oyaga (from the legendary Toto La Momposina,) playing percussion. Marco has since moved back to Colombia and percussion duties have been shared by fellow Colombian Alberto Ramon who also adds vocals and flute, and Ivan Moreno from Spain. They are currently joined by Soloman Ahmed on double bass, and one of Bristol's most exciting young horn players, James Morton on alto sax. In five-piece or six-piece format Pete Airey often adds Spanish guitar and vocals and Matt Jones plays drums.
Puravida present a song-based repertoire with dynamic percussion driving the latin-soul rhythms. Add strong, jazzy lead and chorus vocals, soulful sax or flute and you have their essential sound: an infectious, danceable malange of styles and influences.
The repertoire ranges from exciting, latin flavoured original material to inventive re-interpretations of songs from Cuba, Brazil and Colombia as well as occasional soul-jazz classics. The set and line-up can adapt according to the venue and audience; the band can do a 100% latin set when appropriate or alternatively funk it up! They can present predominantly original material mostly composed in Ecuador or, alternatively, a party/dance set of popular latin and/or soul-jazz classics, all stamped with their uniquely infectious sound.
Puravida started playing Bristol..s clubs and bars in the summer of 2003. In a short time they have honed and consolidated their sound and established a reputation for exciting live sets played with energy and conviction.
DJ Metisse, Arc Bar, Bristol (2003): "What a fantastic and charismatic metissage (blend)! An amazing privilege to host them, this is definitely a band with a great future."
LocalSceneRecords (2008):You guys are amazing...awesome...the vocals and the musicianship are in the pocket!"
