About me: We are the Traverse City area chapter of PURE (Public Urban Ritual Experiment) and the Dancers of the Rising Phoenix.
Our homebase is the Beledi Global Dance Center in Traverse City, MI, owned by our goddess-in-residence, Penny.
Amira Hamzar, winner of the 2007 Michigan Renaissance Festival’s Middle Eastern Dance Competition, is a dance instructor and performer whose home base is Beledi Global Dance & Boutique in Traverse City Michigan. She and her troupe the Dancers of the Rising Phoenix have performed throughout Michigan and are currently expanding to outside their home state. Amira teaches and performs dance forms other than Cabaret and Tribal Bellydance including Polynesian and Masala Bhangra and Bellydance fusions like Pop Raks and Rak-a-Billy. Not only is she the director of the Dancers of the Rising Phoenix, she is also the Facilitator of the Traverse City Chapter of PURE, the Public Urban Ritual Experiment. PURE is a different kind of dance troupe that focuses on raising money and awareness for charity while educating the public as to what the ancient art of Bellydance truly is and was co-founded in New York City by Kaeshi Chai of Bellyqueen and the Bellydance Superstars. Amira has been fortunate to have learned from many of the Bellydance Superstars as well as other instructors from both the states and around the globe. Her goal is to pass on all that she has learned and bless others as she has been blessed through dance. Bellydance can be healing on many levels including physical, emotional and spiritual and Amira wishes to give the gift of this magickal transformation to all who seek it. As all instructors are consummate students, Amira is currently expanding her dance and music repertoire and is learning Clogging and how to play the Riq (tambourine).
The Dancers of the Rising Phoenix, directed by Amira Hamzar, is a troupe that performs not only Cabaret and Tribal Bellydance as well as its fusions but also other dance forms from around the globe. They have performed throughout Michigan and are currently expanding their dance venues to outside of their home state. When performing both traditional and modern Bellydance, they dance with props such as sword (Sayf), tray, fire, tambourine (Riq), Veil, Cane (Assaya) and the Wings of Isis and are currently expanding their dance repertoire to include the Zills, Double Veil, Poi, Voi (Veil-Poi) and Feather Fans. When performing as the Dancers of the Rising Phoenix, their mission is to properly represent the ancient and sacred dance forms with both respect and passion. When performing as PURE, their goal is to raise both money and awareness for deserving charities as well as to educate the public as to what Bellydance truly is, an ancient art form deserving of respect. These ladies are not only sisters in dance but are also friends and co-collaborators for choreography, costuming and performance themes. Amira feels blessed to have them in her life.

Who I'd like to meet: Though some of us have had the privilege of meeting several of the Bellydance Superstars, we always welcome the opportunity to meet, and work with, them again. This includes, but is in no way limited to: Jillina, Ansuya, Petite Jamilla, Rachel Brice and The Indigo, and Kaeshi Chai and Amar Gamal and other dancers of BellyQueen. They are such inspirations and we really look up to them.
