About me: We are the Traverse City area chapter of PURE (Public Urban Ritual Experiment).
Greetings from the Traverse City chapter of PURE!
PURE, the Public Urban Ritual Experiment, was founded in New York City and has since blossomed internationally.
Chapters are non-profit organizations comprised of dancers and drummers who come together for the purposes of giving back to their community through the performing arts; music and dance.
PURE is a spiritual project that is dedicated to healing, peace and connecting to the divine.
PURE Traverse City is available for charitable event performances as well as Blessings, Dance Workshops, Healing and Spirituality Workshops or Events, and Drumming and Rhythm Workshops.

How did PURE get started?
PURE was co-founded in New York City by Kaeshi Chai of Bellyqueen and The Bellydance Superstars and Darshan of Gypsy Caravan.
What does PURE stand for?
PURE stands for Public Urban Ritual Experiment and the name PURE acknowledges “going back to the source” of Middle Eastern Dance and pays homage to the dance’s origins as a communal ritual as well as well as highlighting the healing essence of the many different dance traditions. “P” is for Public; taking the dance to the streets while raising awareness to charitable causes. “U” is for Urban; the towns and cities that we live in, the modern-day equivalent to the ancient tribes. “R” is for Ritual; our dances our moving mediation and the music and dance together recreate the ancient communal rituals of tribes past. “E” is for Experiment; we constantly try new things and evolve and explore our art.
What are PURE’s goals?
Members of PURE wish to make positive change within themselves so that they can make a positive change within their audience as well as their community. This is done through centering the mind, body and soul through music and dance, connecting to each other through drumming and dance, reaching out to the audience, recognizing our place as individuals and as a group, building community, effecting global action, improving peoples’ perception of Bellydance, and celebrating the beauty of diverse body types and ages.
Is PURE religious?
PURE is a spiritual project while being non-denominational: PURE respects all religions and is inclusive rather than exclusive. Choreographies are inspired by many traditional sacred dances and the steps are refined to fit our modern dance style while remaining uplifting and empowering.
Is PURE political?
PURE transcends politics and is not aligned with any particular party; remaining inclusive and not being divisive.
What dance style is PURE?
PURE’s foundation is Middle Eastern Dance but also includes World Dance styles. Bellydancers and World Dancers of various dance levels are welcome to join PURE. Elements of Tribal Style Bellydance thread through the PURE choreographies as Tribal has an emphasis on the group dynamic as well as embracing the modern and the ancient simultaneously. The ideal of PURE is to dance together like a flock of birds. rooted in strength and community, we maintain a connection with each other and the group energy. PURE also focuses on the ancient healing dances of various cultures keeping this tradition alive today.
How is PURE different from other Dance Companies?
PURE is a group project and all are encouraged to add their ideas (instead of being led by a single Director/Choreographer). Although performance-quality dancing occurs, it isn’t just a performance, but a shared dance ritual where the dancers move and breathe together as one. PURE is also about healing; healing ourselves as well as our community. PURE members make new friends within the collective as well as laugh and have fun while working to make a positive change.
What is PURE’s costuming?
PURE has a standard costume that has an emphasis on the face, belly and hands. PURE is a spiritual project and the colors were chosen accordingly; black to represent Mother Earth and blue to represent the nourishing water and the air that we breathe (please note that white is sometime substituted for black during outside summer performances). Flowers are worn in the hair which is either partially or all the way up and out of the face. The costuming is designed to fit all body-types and are finance-friendly. Although a “uniform”, all dancers are encouraged to use their imagination to let their own personality shine through.

What can PURE TC be booked for?
PURE TC performs to both live drumming and canned music to help raise money and awareness for charities at their events. While our focus is the Grand Traverse area, we are willing to travel throughout Michigan to help “lend a hand” through the performing arts.
How else does PURE TC give back to the community?
PURE TC also hosts their own events to help raise money and awareness for local charities.
Through music and dance, PURE can bless your special event including rites of passage, milestone celebrations, house-blessings and candlelight vigils.
What does PURE TC offer along the lines of Healing and Spirituality?
In late 2008, PURE co-founder Kaeshi Chai encouraged the various chapters to delve into offering Healing and Spirituality Workshops. Some workshops will focus on ancient healing dances while others will focus solely on spirituality.
