Here are some of our most exciting upcoming and current releases.
SINGLES - All exclusive to Pure Groove
This first release on Transparent is likely to be one of the most exciting debuts of the year. You might have heard of this Massachusetts lad on the blogs for his reworkings of MGMT and Little Boots - or you might just have heard this track itself as it's spread like wildfire since the tasty Transparent blog first mentioned it earlier this year. It's a truly original oddball pop sensation - all pervy squelching basslines coupled with glorious melancholy vocals and dreamy harmonies.
Now signed to Atlantic, this is the man formerly known as Count Fisher's last indie single before he becomes a global pop machine. Fused with the grooves of David Byrne and the widescreen soundscapes of Arcade Fire, this also has a charming, almost Smokey Robinson style pop quality. It's a special record.
The next release on Transparent comes from Cymbals Eats Guitars, who are so hot on the blog world now that my cables melted the last time I visited Gorilla vs Bear. This single is a double header of delectable Americana indie rock - think Janes Addiction meets Modest Mouse. Brilliant recent album and this is an ace single from it.
Searing alt-rock that sounds like The Klaxons meets Mcluskey. That really shouldn't work but boy this does... We're weeing ourselves in excitement that this is coming out on our own Pure Groove Records. Instore too soon!
Disco army the PHCB number about 10 (we think..) and come across like a Polyphonic Spree that grew up in Studio 54. 15-20 is one of the singles of the year, a killer 70s tinged disco-funk stomper that has club anthem written all over it. Big track for the summer.
The voice of Feist, the invention of Juana Molina, and the hooded jumpers of the Klaxons all rolled into this sonic adventurer who can happily write some of the best songs around at the moment. This really is a smasher and this Brooklyner has got us inventing adjectives just to describe how much we love. This is a aulomorphic work of genius! On Two Syllable, which we feel might be the hottest label in the world in about six months.
Two of our favourite new bands of 2008 come together to end the January blues and kickstart 2009. Primary 1 is now signed to Atlantic so this is a real treat to have them with 50 Bones - his canny mix of party funk and digital boogie grooves always rocks the house. The Shoes' debut also came through 50 Bones - Knock Out was a blisteing slice of electronic rock dynamite that exploded in many a dancefloor.
Latest from the wonderful Neon Gold stable out of New York, Yes Giantess (formerly just Giantess) share a little sonic similarities to their labelmates Passion Pit, with a melding of chunky 80s synth leads with eurodisco rhythms and arpegiated grooves. Big pop hit.
300 copies, screenprinted sleeves, bonus free CD containing a mix of unreleased music plus some super rare influences... Do you need any more??!! Fronted and anchored by the seminal Death In Vegas's founder Richard Fearless, Black Acid's pyschadlic furrages are the sound of chaos and beauty working in tandem, with Fearless conducting with his experienced hands. A special package for a special band - this follows their classic debut on Fitzrovian from last year.
300 copies and that's yer lot! San Francisco's Lemonade are our new fave band and this is their House Of Jealous Lovers - a live anthem that's ready to explode on these shores. Bog standard verses and choruses aren't the template here, this ebbs and flows and is designed to pulse and simmer like the best dance tracks - building into euphoric peaks before giving the crowd a chance to catch their breath. Fantastic Kid 606 remix on the flip too. We're well chuffed to have this one coming out through Pure Groove.
Is this the best single since man decided that music should be whacked onto oil-based materials which he later called vinyl? We think so! A screaming slab of dirgey pop magic, not a million miles from MGMT. The B-sides see the band return to more stripped alt-rock, which is also ace.
Blackpool-bred, London-based Little Boots, also known as Victoria Hesketh, is the former lead singer of Dead Disco, and now the hottest thing on Planet Pop. This debut album is coming out on CD everywhere, but if you want the deluxe vinyl edition then you'll only get it in one shop, and one shop only, and that's Pure Groove! Starting on with new single New In Town, it goes via italo on Stuck On Repeat, bassbin ratting stomp-pop on Meddle and stops by the uplifting melodic joy of Earthquake. It's been well worth the wait.
Disco army the PHCB number about 10 (we think..) and come across like a Polyphonic Spree that grew up in Studio 54. Their debut album features, 15 to 20, one of the singles of the year, a killer 70s tinged disco-funk stomper that has club anthem written all over it. The rest of the album is just as strong, with soulful orchestral disco soul that'll do it for fans of Hercules & Love Affair, 4 Hero, or Zero 7. Debut album a week early.
You'll either be majorly excited by the fact we're repressing this exclusively for the shop or you haven't heard the band. For DFA1979 are one of the best five or so bands of this decade, no questions asked. Two men who when teamed up created some of the most rawkus, awe-inspiring live shows ever experienced, and amazingly, when it was transferred to wax, sounded almost as terrifying. It's been completely out of stock on vinyl UNTIL NOW and rarer than a Sir Fred Goodwin's Man Of The Year trophies. Get involved now - this won't be around for long!
And here it is, the second in our new series of compilations. Everything on here is boxfresh and so exciting we can't help but shout about it - Whitey, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, The Joy Formidable, Gold Teeth, Gentle Friendly, Televised Crimewave, The Hundred In The Hands, Peggy Sue, Marina & The Diamonds and more! Bargain.
Whitey - Stay On The Outside (Marquis Cha Cha)
Out In Autumn
He's back! After the Made Of Night teaser, Whitey returns with a series of low key shows and a second album. Is it sounding good? Does the Pope shit in the woods? It's a fecking monster! Slung with a groove so swinging that it's hosting sex parties and the man's trademark nonchalantly understated vocals, this is an early contender for album of the year.
Second CD mix album in the series after the magical debut by Nadia Ksaiba. The second is by the London-based DJ Matt Waites, also known as Nightmoves, and this mix has absolutely floored us. Weaving in and out of genres, it's immaculately selected and mixed - taking in disco, leftfield house and all sorts of dark bleepy magic. It's special. Only 100 copies made of this amazing compilation, all hand-printed.
