Bec & Beth (& Soph)
Last year, while the Hot Puppies were on a break, from within the band emerged something equally special, the friendship – musical and personal – of the girls Bec Newman and Beth Gibson, which up until then had been part of the band’s mix, but has now been given a stage all to itself.
Last year’s 4-track Purr EP was an offering of originals ("French Song") and covers from the likes of Burt Bacharach ("Anyone Who Had A Heart"), The Inkspots ("I'm Making Believe") and The Smiths ("Last Night I Dreamt Somebody Loved Me"), originally recorded to take Bec's mind off the arrangements in the build up to her recent wedding. The young bride-to-be and her friend Beth set up some mics in Bec’s flat and recorded the EP of lost love and heartache. Stripped back to the barest of essentials (acoustic guitar, keyboard and vocals) the recordings were perfect for those intimate, late night moments.
Subba Cultcha described the EP tracks as "all fragile and beautiful as a porcelain kitten in a pillow fight out of bounds. Lovely noises, lovely harmonies", Sounds XP said that it is "a record full of blushing charm and with all the thrill of the unrequited crush" and Bethan and Huw and Steve Lamacq all featured tracks on their shows.
This year Bec and Beth have expanded their line-up to include Soph. So, you now have three wonderful reasons not to miss this show.
“More Welshness with Bec Wood and Beth Gibson, here moonlighting from their day jobs with the Hot Puppies. They specialize in serenely muscular two-and three-part harmonising, old-timey gospel from the Coen Brothers hugely influential O Brother, Where Art thou?, country crooning and torch balladry. Bec Wood launches without fanfare into Anyone Who Had A Heart and proves an effortlessly accomplished singer with a huge range. She's also emphatically knocked-up, noting that playing the guitar is becoming ever more difficult as it gets further away from her body.
Accompanied by minimal, bordering on skeletal, instrumentation, a shaker or plucked bass viola and a third young lady (that no amount of dogged detective work has managed to identify), they glide from Julee Cruise's Lynchian narcotic drift to the husky chanson of French Song. Beth sits at the piano and sings softly. These are a quietly confident pair of performers ably demonstrating their ability without any vulgar showboating. As they unhurriedly switch instruments a mood of comfortable melancholia descends upon the audience and it's really quite enchanting. An encore is demanded and the trio return to revisit 'Down In The River To Pray' and it's just as lovely second time around.” - Venue Magazine

Purr - Friday 3rd July we have
Let's Wrestle, Race Horses and Gentlemen's Relish as well as Phonographic DJs and the PantherGirls of course...
LET'S WRESTLE: Let's Wrestle are the new indie kids on the block and 'song for abba tribute record' is a fantastic slice of chaos that sounds like early Wedding Present with guitars that clatter at each other mixed with the shambolic nature of early Flying Nun records and Pavement. the vocalist is a dead ringer for nikki sudden as he sings with a drunken drawl with lyrics that need to be heard to be believed. From Rough Trade
RACE HORSES: New signings to Fantastic Plastic the Welsh foursome play psychedelic harmonious pop inspired by Beach Boys, Velvet Underground, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, Serge Gainsbourg, The Kinks, Os Mutantes, Can, Elvis and George Formby

GENTLEMEN'S RELISH: Next up, another outing for Gentlemen’s Relish, once again down to a two-piece, Gary the howling drummer and the splendid baritoned guitar player, alternating between Spanish and electric guitar, the warm theatrical voice mildly reminiscent of Jonathan Richman, telling tales invoking surreal yet everyday imagery. With tracks such as ’Pencil Time’ and ’Wig city’, the band gets you grinning, yet the playing is tight and with the help of a digital loop is a little fuller than you might expect. A band that makes you smile, as well as tap your foot. - from Sonic Sanctuary
