10 things you didn't know about PUTNAM HALL

    1. done the vans warped tour
    2. we've played on a live mtv video program that aired to 200 million people through Direct TV
    3. don't know if you've heard about this little video game called Rockband??? yeah, well we were invited onto the inaugural MTV U/Rockband video game tour that stretched across the US, but the tour got canned at the last second. much to our chagrin, the Rockband 2 tour ended up being headlined by Panic at the Disco. so i guess the game did okay. haha
    4. al was not our original bass player, but he's been on every record and we love him dearly. the first guy quit very early on when it was clear that kris and i wanted to make crazy songs and go for it.
    5. we've played at festivals that included the violent femmes, psychedelic furs, lit, and sugar ray.
    6. putnam hall is the first band that i've ever played guitar or sang lead vocals for, but i've been in a zillion bands as a bassist and vocalist.
    7. kris engineered our record "fight the format" - yes, the entire album.
    8. "fight the format" was mixed by Bryan Carlstrom (the Offspring, Social Distortion)
    9. we used to get invited to play asian cultural events, but we don't do that anymore. i never imagined that i'd see priscilla anh on david letterman, but wow! i'm stoked, good for her!
    10. al used to have a fancy bmw, but had to sell it for the band.

There you have it. 10 things you probably didn't know about us. New shows coming, new video out soon, and more importantly, new songs.

  • "To Kill" "the Messenger" at Sundance

    Current mood:animated

We are so pleased to announce that our song "to kill" is in the new 2009 Oren Moverman film "the messenger" starring Woody Harrelson, Ben Foster, and Samantha Morton.
We are all big fans of Oren Moverman following his 2008 Bob Dylan  movie "I'm not there" which included an amazing cast of Cate Blanchett, Christian Bale and Heath Ledger.
"The messenger" is currently at Sundance.  We hope it wins every award there and then wins five million Academy Awards later.  Thank you all for your support, we hope you will come see it with us when it comes to theaters!

  • phantoms of inspiration (Phantom Planet Blog)

    Current mood:thoughtful

One of my favorite bands ever broke up last week - Phantom Planet. Those of you who have seen a Putnam Hall show recently have seen us do a snippet of their song "Raise the Dead."
Well, their breakup a couple of days ago was a real loss for me. There are few current bands that put out songs that truly make me aspire to be a better songwriter. Phantom Planet not only did this on a consistent basis, but also reminded me that being true and different was still possible in this increasingly artificial musical landscape. (Given their breakup, maybe it's not??????)
Sometimes, we (meaning Kris, Al and especially I) get lost in the flurry of it all; the music industry is truly a hubbub of posturing and pretention. Phantom Planet records remind me to stay real and to keep my head and our music out of the sewer water that we're swimming in.
Their videos were no exception either - they brought back that lo-fi, fun element that I loved about Beastie Boys videos. Watch Big Brat and you'll see that all of that just looked like they were having FUN for eff's sake! Imagine that! A rock band doing something from the heart!
In any case, it's safe to say that a lot of what you hear from Putnam Hall has the same intention as the music of Phantom Planet. I don't know if we did that consciously, but I am also not scared to admit how much they have influenced me. Musically, the two bands don't sound similar, but I've always loved the sophistication of their songs, their sense of musical adventure, their cohesive vibe and I've definitely tried to incorporate those elements into Putnam Hall's music.
That said, I'm letting you in about my disappointment in the breakup of Phantom Planet...as a musician, as a writer, and most importantly, as a fan. I will always have fond memories over the years that were soundtracked by Phantom Planet songs and those live on in my head and my heart forever.
So, anyway, on this rainy Thanksgiving - here's to you - Alex, Sam, Darren, Jacque, Jason, and even Jeff -cheers and many thanks to you for such great music over the years. Best of luck and thank you for being my phantom of inspiration.

Don't know Phantom Planet? Check out a couple of songs that I wish I had written - After Hours, The Guest, Anthem, and most recently, Do the Panic. On second thought, just buy all the records and find out what the hell I'm talking about - start with the self-titled "Phantom Planet", then get "Raise the Dead", then the "Guest", then "Is missing".
