Books
I think the most important book ever written was Moby Dick. I mean, that's where Moby got his name, right?
I'm an attorney and founding member of EASON & VAN LEUNEN, LLC, in St. Louis, Missouri.
I grew up in Warson Woods, Missouri. I attended the Warson Woods Elementary School--Duran Duran and "Jack and Diane." "Footloose" was on the Top 40 charts, while I attended Hixson Junior High School. Guns & Roses and "Orange Crush" were still fresh as I played football for the mighty-mighty Statesmen of Webster Groves High School.
I was fortunate enough to be accepted by the Virginia Military Institute ("VMI"). My major, at first, was Biology. I remember being handed a fetal shark dissection manual for my first biology lab assignment. The manual was beautifully illustrated with nice bright colors. Each shark organ was clearly drawn and delightfully designated. I studied this manual. I thought, "this is the power of mankind--to take the unknown and make it knowable."
I remember cutting open that shark...I couldn't tell one organ from another. The mess in front of me looked like Grey Poupon stirred into a shallow plate of pasta.
Shortly thereafter, I walked to my academic advisor's office, and changed my major to English. I never looked back.
After VMI, I entered the Master of Arts program in English at the University of Missouri-Columbia ("Mizzou"). I taught several Exposition and Argumentation classes at Mizzou, most of which were English as a Second Language ("ESL"). I loved it.
I met my wife, Stephanie, at Mizzou. We have been married for thirteen years. We have two sons, Paul and Etienne, and a daughter, Alice.
After Mizzou, I taught for five years (1998-2002) at St. Charles Community College, which is affectionately called "skuh" by everyone who graces its halls. At the same time, I enrolled in the night-program at Saint Louis University School of Law.
In September of 2003, I became a member of the Missouri Bar.
Who I'd like to meet:
Dick Cheney: Maybe we could go hunting together, talk gun safety, laugh and throw our legs over each other's. He just seems like such a nice guy. Seriously. . .I mean it.
No I don't.
I really want to meet Will Ferrell, and I don't think I have to say why.
I wish I could have met Phil Hartman.
I DID meet the famous Beat poet, Allen Ginsberg, at the Virginia Military Institute ("VMI"). I'll talk to anybody about that. I just wish I could have gotten to know him better. Here's a picture of him drawing a little Buddha in my Norton Edition of Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass.
AH!
SHOUT OUT to Col. Gordon Ball (VMI), my academic advisor when I was a Keydet.
I wish that I could have met Tennessee Williams. Click on the image below.
As a graduate student at Mizzou, I worked on verifying "facts" contained in letters written by Williams. Williams embellished on and, at times, created his own truth in his letters to friends and family, much like his character, Blanche Dubois, in "A Streetcar Named Desire." "Streetcar" is, without a doubt, the best play in the canon of American Literature.
