A Message from the youth minister
Benjamin Franklin said: "Remember this, they that will not be counseled cannot be helped. If you do not hear Reason, she will rap your knuckles." A minister spent some time visiting in a penal institution where four hundred men were incarcerated. He was impressed with the fact that most of the men were young. Being a parent himself, he thought of the hundreds of fathers and mothers, to say nothing of grandparents, other elderly relatives, and perhaps Sunday school teachers, who had lavished good advice on those boys. Had they taken the advice of their elders, few of the lads would have been sent to prison. So often we think our elders are just "old fogies," only to wake up eventually to the fact that their advice was worth something after all. Franklin was right: "If you do not hear Reason, she will rap your knuckles."
But this begs the question why don't people listen to the advice of those who have lived and been around the block a few times? Why is it that we think when someone gives us some advice, even when we ask, "They don't know anything"... "They're old!" The bible says in Prov. 11:14, "For lack of guidance a nation falls, but many advisers make victory sure." There is something to be said for someone who knows what they're talking about, but even more so, for those who will listen. Knowledge is awesome but you can't sail the seas unless you have the experience on the boat. There is nothing that can replace wisdom and those who have it are people to be valued and heard.
