2009 SCHEDULE
* December 19th @ Cleveland Assembly Hall (Summer Reign '09)
PWA Queensland returns to the Cleveland Assembly Hall for the first time since the historic “Rise of the Warriors III”. This venue has held some of the most historic matches and moments in PWAQ history and on this night, there will be many more to follow. Featuring title matches and Street Fights, PWAQ is putting it all on the line – including the Commissionership! – in one of our biggest shows of the year.
The heat is on, summer is here, reigns will begin and end on this night – as PWA Queensland proudly presents “SUMMER REIGN 2009”.
On November 21st 2009 history was made, as PWA Queensland crowned our fifth International Champion in AJ Istria. Istria defeated champion Esteban Molina and Ash Riot in an epic Triple Threat contest at the Valley. Following the match, Istria extended the offer to his friend Riot, to be his very first title defence at Cleveland. Riot accepted, thus making the match and our main event for the show – official.
The relationship between these two men has a long and storied history. Ever since winning Rise of the Warriors 3, there have been subtle changes in the way Istria not only wrestles, but presents himself to the company and to the fans. The biggest change was his willingness to help out a person that he saw potential in – this person was Ash Riot.
For weeks we saw Istria come out to help Riot, including helping him to the back following a brutal contest with Mark Davis. The breaking point came when during a Number One Contenders match between Riot and Mason Childs, Istria threw in the towel on behalf of Ash because he would not submit to Childs. Istria cited that he was helping Riot by not letting him get injured – but Riot wanted more answers, and demanded Istria face him in a match.
The two faced off at “The Battle of Beenleigh”, where it was Istria who defeated Riot. Ash though, was not satisfied and demanded Istria tell him why he was trying to help. Istria told Riot of the potential he saw in him and said that together they could help each other become better wrestlers and better people. Riot wanted to be a top star and Istria wanted the accolades of the fans. Riot accepted Istria’s offer of friendship and for the next few months we saw the two bond together and become close friends.
At “Proving Ground 4” (October Night Two), it was Istria’s Nightmare Assassin Squad facing off against Esteban’s Team Underground in a Six Man Tag Team match. Istria was able to score the pin on Esteban, giving his team the win. Due to Istria pinning the current champion, he was then given a title match to face Esteban at Valley in November.
Following this news, Istria went to the PWA Board and offered that the match should be made a Triple Threat, to include his friend Ash Riot – due to the fact that he already had a one-on-one shot against Esteban at the Valley a few months earlier. The Board agreed that this match would be spectacular, and all parties agreed to this new contest.
The stage was set for an epic Triple Threat battle and we were not disappointed – with many claiming it was the best main event contest PWAQ has produced in its three year history. The match though, was not without controversy. During his entrance, Esteban was attacked by bitter rival Mason Childs. With Esteban being helped to the back it was down to Istria and Riot to battle it out for the title. After several minutes of back and forth action, Esteban’s music hit and he returned to the match despite being bloodied and concussed. Just as it looked as though Esteban would pull off an amazing victory, Mason again attacked Esteban finally taking him out of the match for good, essentially costing him the title. Riot and Istria continued to battle on, when suddenly D*Star of the NAS came out and attempted to hit Riot with a chair shot – but Istria pushed Riot out of the way, absorbing the shot himself. Riot then went up top and hit a frog splash but Istria managed to kick out! Both men continued to give it their all, but in the end AJ Istria came out on top to become the NEW champion.
Following the match, Istria thanked the company for giving him the opportunity to train and wrestle, and the fans for coming month in and month out to support the sport he loves. Istria cited that it felt great to EARN this moment, taking a shot at his estranged manager Donnie St Michael, who had already attempted to take the belt away from Istria and gloat in his own glory. He then thanked Riot, who had “pulled him away from a dark road”, leading to this moment. Istria then offered him to be his first title defence next month at Cleveland, to which Riot accepted. The fans applauded as both men had finally got what they wanted, Istria – the accolades of the fans, and Riot – who is back in the title hunt.
After so much back story and controversy, these two friends will face off again – but this time the only question that is being asked is, who will walk away as champion?
If there ever was a match in PWA Queensland history that could change the course of the company forever – this is it! On December 19th, current PWAQ Commissioner Mark Williamson will put his role on the line in a STREET FIGHT against Nightmare Assassin Squad (NAS) manager, and his former business partner, Donnie St Michael! If Donnie wins, a new age will begin as he becomes Commissioner, but if Mark wins, the NAS, PWAQ’s original faction force, must disband forever!
This will not be for the faint of heart – as both men in the past few months have been on the verge of destroying one another. It will not a match. It will be an ugly brawl, with everything that these men do to each other, completely legal!
Since the beginning of PWAQ, Donnie and Mark have played pivotal roles in PWAQ. Mark was half owner of the company, along with having a group of wrestlers that he managed. Meanwhile, Donnie formed the NAS in an attempt to take over. The two groups grew in strength as they banded together to form PWA Nightmare – in an attempt to destroy the company. Since then, there have been many twists and turns in the road, eventually leading to Team PWA Queensland regaining control of the company, with Williamson blaming Donnie and his Squad for the loss. Eventually, Mark was ousted from the company and wasn’t seen for several months.
Cut to March 2009 (“New Hazard”) and it was announced that long-time Commissioner of PWAQ Nic XL would be leaving the company. There was much speculation about who would take over the role, and many people put their hands up for the position. Nobody wanted it more than Donnie, but much to his disgust and the surprise of many, the Board announced that the new Commissioner was none other than Mark Williamson! Since then, Donnie has vowed to remove Williamson from his position as Commissioner and “rightfully take his place” as the main source of power within PWAQ.
Over the next several months, the hatred between Williamson and St Michael has reached a breaking point. At “Proving Ground 3” (October 2009 – Night 1), Donnie and the NAS attacked Mark, attempting to break his neck. A group of wrestlers ran out to stop the attack, but the damage was done. With “Proving Ground 4” the following night, the status of the Commissioner was unknown, but his absence was abused as the NAS and Brotherhood factions attempted to take over the show. At the end of the night, as the NAS were celebrating their win in the main event, shockingly Mark ran out and attacked Donnie – attempting to break his ankle. The two had to be separated by the roster as both were screaming for blood.
With their hatred now at new heights, the match was signed and commissioned by the Board and it is now official! This will not be pretty in any sense of the word. Expect blood. Expect pain. And expect both men to have tricks up their sleeves as they fight for more than just retribution. Who will walk away as Commissioner of PWA Queensland? And will that man even be able to walk away? Find out on December 19th!
