James M. Fortier & Troy R. Johnson Are Much To Blame For Their So Called "well-researched" Documentary Titled Alcatraz is Not an Island. They Failed To Acknowledge The Picture's of UNA Members Clearly Wearing Their Bright Red "Indian Power" Buttons. They obviously Failed To Do Any Research Into Which Militant Indian Organization Had Their Members Present From Day One to The End of The Alcatraz Take Over. UNA Was The 1st Militant Indian Organization In The United States To Rise to National Prominence.

The Longest Walk 1978.
What: Rally For The Longest Walk 1978
When: March 26, 1978
Where: Pueblo Colorado 1978:
Eleven legislative bills introduced in the 95th U.S. Congress would have abrogated Native Treaties that protect remaining Native sovereignty. The Longest Walk of 1978 was a peaceful, spiritual effort to educate the public about Native American rights and the Native way of life. Native American Treaty Rights under the U.S. Constitution are to be honored as the supreme law of the land. The 3,600 mile walk was successful in its purpose: to gather enough support to halt proposed legislation abrogating Indian treaties with the U.S. government. Shortly After, The American Indian Religious Freedom Act (AIRFA) of 1978 was passed. As a result of The 1978 Longest Walk, Indigenous people were granted the federal legislative right to freedom of religion, a fundamental right guaranteed to all Americans under the U.S. Constitution.

SAN FRANCISCO 10-31-08 : Cara Jones Reports On ICE Raid Protestors
A member of the Hoopa tribe, Mr. Risling was also of Yurok and Karuk ancestry. ..Risling's approach led to many successes. He co-founded California Indian Legal Services and the Native American Rights Fund, whose lawyers fought for long-ignored treaty rights all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. In the 1970s, Risling was appointed by three U.S. presidents to serve on the National Advisory Council on Indian Education and was integral to the passage of the Indian Education Act and Indian Tribal Community College Act -- legislation that led to the founding of 31 Indian community colleges and dozens of K-12 reservation education programs across the nation. ....Among the institutions Risling has helped to found, and the one of which he seems most proud, is D-Q University -- which has been the only private American Indian college in California. Built at an old WWII-era communications station outside of Davis, D-QU has been dedicated to teaching American Indian culture and history and to helping all native peoples remember their past and determine for themselves its meanings. And though, unfortunately, the school has been facing serious financial difficulties and recently had to shut its doors after losing its accreditation, D-QU is not at an end, Risling says. He notes that the school has been teaching a diverse population, even offering shops for state employees and officials about the history of gaming tribes...

Feb. 1, 2008 protest at Sacramento California. A group of Native American Activists from different coalitions got to together to protest several matters effecting Native people of California like, Prop. 94, 95, 96, 97, disenrollment and why rich gaming casino tribes in California are not backing D.Q. University, a tribal college located just outside of Davis California.
The groups included Poor Magazine, D.Q. Students,United Native Americans,Inc and other local Indian people.
Group of Native American people gathered to make their concerns heard about the fact that a few rich gaming casino tribes should be funding Native American Indian colleges and universities like D.Q. University, which is located just outside of Davis California. Some Native people are protesting disenrollment in California. Many rich gaming tribes with casinos have disenrolled many members and disenrolling is a weapon used on tribal members to quell their freedom of speech and freedom to keep tribal governments free from corruption. Disenrolling is major tool used by many corrupt tribal leaders.

About me:
I am Cheyenne River Lakota Sioux and Creek. I'm Vice President of United Native Americans, Inc. United Native Americans, Inc (or U.N.A.) was formed in 1968 in San Francisco, California to promote the General Welfare of Native Americans. There are no paid staff or officers in U.N.A. and all work is donated. U.N.A. is not funded and exists solely on the support derived from membership dues, the sale of U.N.A. Merchandise, Tee Shirts, buttons, bumper stickers, and Posters, plus the few donations that have been received.
U.N.A was founded by Indians for Indians and is controlled by Indians.
U.N.A. has been Labeled a "Militant" organization because of it's Aggressive Stand it has taken and because of the slogan it stresses--"INDIAN POWER", which is defined as Self-Determination, the Right to Run your Own Affairs and to Direct your Own Destiny, which is something Indian People Definitely Need. U.N.A is Definitely an Action Organization and if this means "Militant" then we are Militants. We as Native Americans, in order to perpetuate our Heritage, Exercise Constructive Leadership, and to perfect a Native American Organization which will Respond to the Needs of Native Americans.
U.N.A. Strives to Improve Indian Image.
U.N.A. has been one of the Strongest advocates to improve the "Negative" image of Indian People, and has been critical of the "Movie Industry" for their Exploitation of Indians, and the Stereotype they have created of the "drunken, inarticulate, savage." U.N.A. is also doing intensive work in the literary field, searching out Books and other Literature that add to this "negative image" of Indian People.
U.N.A. Testifies In Congress.
In 1968, Senate Sub-Committee Hearings on Indian Education held in Washington D.C., U.N.A. National President, Lehman L. Brightman gave some very damaging evidence against the Bureau of Indian Affairs boarding schools and their policy of taking young Indian children way from their parents and placing them in 'off-reservation" boarding schools, thousands of miles away from their homes. Mr. Brightman called Indian Education under the Bureau of Indian Affairs a "National Disgrace."
U.N.A. Investigates Indian Boarding Schools.
U.N.A. has tried to act as a "watch dog" over the governmental agencies that control Indian affairs, and has been extremely critical of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the U.S. Public Health Service for their lack of Aid and callous treatment of Indian people. Since 1968, U.N.A. has investigated four of the Bureau of Indian Affairs Boarding Schools because of complaints of "brutality, - lack of food, -overcrowded living quarters, and to find out why these four high schools were not state accredited." The four government boarding schools investigated by U.N.A. were: Sherman Institute in Riverside, California, --Stewart Institute in Carson City, Nevada, -- Pierre Indian School in Pierre, South Dakota and Phoenix Indian School in Phoenix, Arizona."
U.N.A. Investigates Indian Hospitals.
Due to other complaints by Indian people of "poor medical service and other wrong doings," U.N.A. investigated two Indian hospitals run by the U.S. Public Health Service and exposed the "outrageous practices" to the public and Federal Authorities. The Hospitals investigated by U.N.A. were: Phoenix Indian Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona and the Indian Hospital on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation in Eagle Butte, South Dakota.
Services Provided by U.N.A.
The duties and services provided by U.N.A. are many and varied. U.N.A. provides the security of knowing that someone cares and will go to bat for them when all others won't. We fully realize that Indian people alone cannot rise out of this pit of poverty and neglect and it will take the combined efforts of Indians and Sympathetic non-Indians. For this reason U.N.A. accepts non-Indians as associate members who desire to help and their "expertise" in the fields of 'Law", Education, Medicine, etc, can be put to good use.
We as Native Americans, in order to perpetuate our Heritage, Exercise Constructive Leadership, and to perfect a Native American Organization which will Respond to the Needs of Native American. The Purpose of United Native Americans, Inc. Shall be:
(1) To Actively Participate in Promoting the Health, Education and Welfare of All Native Americans.
(2) To Encourage and Develop Leadership among Native American People.
(3) To Promote Cooperation among Native Americans and their Organizations.
(4) To Focus Public Attention upon those areas in which Injustices to Native Americans can be Fully Recognized and Corrected.
(5) To Encourage and perpetuate the Native American Heritage with it's individual Tribal Customs and Traditions.
(6) To Eliminate Prejudice and Discrimination Against Native Americans.
(7) To Promote the General Welfare of All Native Americans.

A Young Henry Kingman-RIP
I knew Harry Kingman ever since I can remember. He was a survivor of Custer's Last Stand and the Battle of the Little Big Horn. He was a close friend of the Schutterle family and he often told the story which is the Lakota tradition. Harry has been gone for over 50 years, but his memory is still fresh in my mind. I can't forget people like him. I will share what I remember about this wonderful man.
Harry was ten when Custer and his soldiers rode into the camp. He said he hid behind some bushes because everybody knew the soldiers killed women and children. The theory was that nits grew into lice.
After the battle, Harry found his father, Dog's Back, had been killed in the defense of his people. He learned it really did take a village to raise a child.
Although Custer and all his soldiers were killed, the Lakota's understood they were able only to postpone total disaster. When the fighting was over, they had to flee from the United States to seek freedom in Canada. Harry told of the hunger and misery all, even the smallest children, had to endure in the desperate struggle for survival. Their retreat to Canada was long, hard and few survived it.
Years later, after they were allowed to return to their birth land, the Kingman family settled on the west side of the Missouri River which was on the east side of the Cheyenne River Reservation and near what is now called the Four Bears area.
It happened to be my grandfather homesteaded almost directly across the river from the Kingman family. So, my father knew them since he was about 10 years old. That would be about 1911.
Harry would often cross the river when the ice was thick and hunt rabbits on the east side of the river since the forest was thicker and the rabbits more plentiful. Dad said he used to follow Harry when he hunted. Harry carried an old muzzle loader rifle and used black power because it was cheaper. Dad said when Harry would pull down, aim and fire, there was sure to be a rabbit kicking in the snow after the smoke cleared.
Over the years the Kingman and Schutterle families grew to be close friends. As it ended, Agness, Harry's daughter, came to be my godmother. Her only son was in Tennessee and my mother had died so we became just like mother and son when she was in her 90's. We would visit and she would pour her heart out and I would learn.
When Agness died at 96, I helped carry her tiny little body to its final resting place on a gumbo ridge in LaPlant. I always go to visit her when I am in the area. Her grave is now grown over with buffalo grass and other plants of the prairie and there is little trace of her existence.
The last time I saw Harry was at a pow-wow at the old Cheyenne Agency camp grounds, now under the waters of the Ohae Dam - or is it the damn Oahe. That was in the 50's.
It was the final evening of the dances and the air was filled with the smoke of campfires. The smell of fresh cut buffalo meat hung on racks managed to slip between the campfire smoke and fill the remaining space.
There had been great anticipation for the arrival of Harry, and his reverence hung on the tongues of everyone. Suddenly it got quiet with only the yelps of the young dogs and the cries of a few infants to be heard. Finally, I saw him coming. Harry was dressed up in his eagle feather bonnet, beads, moccasins and breast plate made of real bones. Everything was perfectly traditional and authentic.
It wasn't just his walk I recognized. Harry liked to smoke and had a distinctive cough. All these years and I still hear it in my mind.
The dance went on into the night. Harry danced and coughed throughout the evening. I watched in awe as he pranced around the willow cooler. That is the way I will always remember Harry. It got late and I had to get back on my side of the river.
The Lakotas had suffered a lot, but they were clearly resilient. The officials of the United States were the terrorists then. They used small pox infested blankets for biological warfare and wiped out people by the thousands.
Washington forced the Lakota into a style of government they did not understand. The government officials put them on permanent disability on lands that could no longer support them because the buffalo were gone. They seldom got the relief they were promised. Their lands and natural resources were gobbled up by a nation pushing west.
All the Lakotas ever wanted was to be free. The price for that freedom was unaffordable.
