I really enjoy awkward situations and I don't know why.
The following is a portion of my profile from an online dating site:
The sort of things I will probably want to talk about, if we are put into a social situation: Psychology. Physics. Zombies. Plays. Martial Arts. Working in a coffee shop. Politics. Organized religions. Ancient Rome. Literature. Movies. Rock music. Hiking. Shakespeare. Reality TV. Sociology. Lighting design. Sex. Awkwardness. Classical music. Cooking.
If we are expected to come up with an activity these are the kind of things I might want to do:
Go to the Zoo. Go to the Aquarium. See a movie. Go to an art museum. Make dinner. Run around in a park in the middle of the night. See a play. Play pool. Swing dance. Look at yachts. Get coffee. Go on a hike. Go to a bookstore. Go to a Goth club and stand around awkwardly. Rent a movie. See a bluegrass band. Debate. Attend a sporting event. Sit in a crowded location and judge people.
Music
I'm open to all kinds of music, except anything with the word "smooth" in the title. I like to listen to a mix of indie rock, swing, bluegrass, krunk, and classical. But not all at once, though that is an interesting idea.
Some of my favorite bands: Harvey Danger, The Killers, The Strokes, The Shins, Wilco, Counting Crows, Muse, Modest Mouse, Eagle Seagull, Eels. Favorite washtub bass band: The Kitchen Syncopaters.
I'd really like to learn to play electric bass (I play violin and viola, and a little guitar) and drum set, if anyone would like to teach me...
Movies
Dude, it's all about Kurosawa. Ikiru, Seven Samurai are on my top ten favorite movies list... yeah, I have a list. I'm a geek, I know, I know.
Other favorite directors: Terry Gilliam, Wes Anderson, Jeunet and Caro, The Cohen Brothers, Fritz Lang.
Generally a big fan of Japanese cinema, especially horror. I love all B-rated horror, actually, and I think that cheesy horror films are the key to understanding western society. Seriously.
I like to raid cult classic sections: Evil Dead 2, The Cars That Ate Paris, Night of the Living Dead (zombie movies are sweet), Battle Royale, Old Boy, Delicatessan. Other favorite movies: Amelie, Croupier, Good Night and Good Luck, Napolean Dynamite, The Iron Giant, Fight Club (of course), The Stuff, Superbad, Unforgiven, Brazil.
Television
Family guy, Lost, House, Grey's Anatomy, Red Dwarf, the Brak Show, Ugly Betty, Dexter, Firefly, Carnivale.
Books
Some of my favorite writers are: Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett, Marcel Proust, Victor Hugo, Dosteyevsky, Neil Gaiman, Ray Bradbury, Kurt Vonnegut, Hemingway, Dickens, T.S. Eliot, Stephen King, Ken Kesey, Tom Stoppard.
Okay, here are things about me:
I am now 27 and holy crap am I old.
I am currently working as a Barista, while I await the start of graduate school in the fall. Whee!
I am in love with Scarecrow Video and a respectable number of the clerks who work there.
I play violin in an indie rock band called The Greg Dembers. I am eminently stalkable.
I've been working in theatre since I was in kindergarten. I have been an actor, director, stage manager, designer, crew member, and playwright. I've gripped for movies (I got to meet Patrick Stewart!), and been a professional lighting designer. It involves making pretty compositions and having deep conversations about the meaning of story and pushing buttons.
I've also been an electrician, which I like because, even though I am afraid of ladders, I love wearing ratty clothes and carrying things around macho-ly and saying things like "Spinning the barrel on this unit... Can you pass me up a 6 by 9 and a Source-4 size gobo? Damnit, the fuck nut's totally stripped. Working."
Since July I've been doing the occasional call with IATSE, the stagehand's union. It's nice to work on the big professional stages in Seattle and find out that I am actually competent.
I had an irrational fear and love of penguins before it was cool to have an irrational fear and love of penguins.
I like to knit.
I hate Memphis...though I like a few of the people in it.
I love Seattle way, way too much. I especially love the hipsters, though I don't think they like it when I run up and pinch their cheeks and tell them how adorable they are and make cooing noises over their nautical tattoos. .
When I go to movie stores I try to find the cult classic section. If there is no cult section, I cry.
I think both pirates and ninjas are rad...but I like pirates better. They invented the worker's union. Come on.
I have always had a secret desire to be an physicist. How can quantum mechanics not rock your world?
I like cats. I'm afraid of dogs because I think most of them could kick my ass.
Someday, when I own my own country, I shall declare war on Belgium. I wish I could actually be serious about that.
I think the English language is hot. But I speak a little French and am currently trying to learn Bulgarian.
I hope one day to get a PhD.
Who I'd like to meet: object width="425" height="350">......
Your martial art sounds cool, hawaii in the 40's? Does it involve zoot suits and attacking people with your surfboard? Nah just joking, sounds cool though. I'm looking around for someone who teaches Muay Thai, but up here in Marysville is slim pickins.
The Taj Mahal happened about 3 weeks ago ... i was invited to a wedding of a friend of mine. And since I was in India, might as well see the Taj Mahal. Yea ... it is everything they say it is ... and more!
Not really. I had some friends in high school who showed me a few things, but i am in no way proficient and would probably just sit there with my eyes glazed over, slack jawed and drool gently sliding out of the corner of my mouth were i presented with the instrument. I've heard it's easier than guitar, depending on what style you're going for, and with your experience with strings i don't think it would be difficult for you to learn.
If you're serious about the teaching thing, though, i'm serious about learning. It's something that i've wanted to do for a while. i don't need to be awesome at it, just good enough to not hurt people's ears, lol.
Dude..I stopped by your store to visit but you weren't there. Let's hang out ASAP. I'm off Thurs/Fri and want to go shopping on Broadway, let me know if you're down....sorry this comment is so long. :)
So I was totally going to ignore the little alert that told me you had a new profile song, until I read your bulletin about you playing the violin, you sneaky bitch.
WORKING 13 HOURS BECAUSE CHASTINA CALLED OUT FROM GRAVE FTW!!!!!
sigh, I hate how my live has morphed into revolving around Starbucks and foreign people asking for extra-hot no-foam lattes. I'm pretty certain that the only reason they stick to lattes or caramel macchiatos is because that's the only thing they've tried at Starbucks and they're afraid of the other drinks.
Last night, however these two guys came through the drive through, and one of them asked for a frappucino, and when i read it back to him he's like "uh...no.... mach.... macchiato?" so i made him an iced tall cm, and they're all foreign and russian and stuff, and was like "uh... e...... no... blend... ?" So i had to make a frappucino. and right as they drove away I said something to them in Russian and the guy stopped the car and stared at me, then went "Wow." and drove away.
