  • Bio

Questioner is a four piece metal band from Baltimore, MD formed by the members of the late "Isthmus." Isthmus was formed in 2005 by Noel Mueller and Chris May, with Matt Hogans completing the trio in 2007. Jon Rosen joined the group in the summer of 2010, and Questioner was formed. Among other attempts at description, they have been compared to a diverse spread of bands, including Mastodon, Mogwai, Intronaut, and Isis. In the Spring of 2010, the yet unnamed group entered the studio to record their 45 minute debut album, "Questioner," "splicing their wide-ranging influences into an impressive hybrid." Their approach to heavy music has been described as "subversive," "smart, sophisticated metal" while the "superb production" remains "alive and raw." Questioner has shared the stage with a handful of critically acclaimed acts while touring the East Coast, and in their home town of Baltimore, including: Today is the Day, Behold... The Arctopus, Swarm of the Lotus, Cleric, Rosetta, East of the Wall, Balboa, Dysrhythmia, Jucifer, Conifer, Lesbian, Khann, The Wayward, Salome, Wooly Mammoth, Admiral Browning, and many more. They are available for booking at: questioner.band@gmail.com PRESS: "The superb production feels alive and raw, lacking the typical sterility of death metal records. Questioner draws from classic Black Metal acts like Emperor and Bathory while spinning it in a direction that wouldn't feel completely out of place amongst the likes of Isis, Godspeed You! Black Emperor or Godflesh. 4.5 out of 5" - Groovemine.com "But these appearances deceive. Questioner's rhythms never drift; they shift and juke, always grooving away without relying on repetition or even on conventional meters. Just as their more contemplative moments don't dump momentum in favor of drugged ambience, their deft heavy sections have more to offer than tectonic drones. And the band is always happy to throw a curveball: witness the Meshuggah-flavored opener "The Return" and the black metal explosions that crown the "Atlantic" suite and album highlight "Seven Sisters. 8.2 out of 10" - MetalReview.com "You could be forgiven for aligning Questioner with Isis, Cult of Luna, Neurosis, etc. However three minutes into the opener ‘The Return,’ it will be quite obvious that this band are not planning on following a similar path. If you're after Meshuggah-like changes in tempo, soothing mid sections, angular riffs or vocal delivery that can range from Isis-like bellows to death metal growls to black metal shrieks then it's all here. But it’s the atmosphere created by the harmonized vocals over the top of a number of melodies that really sets the mood and pushes this into new territory. 4.5 out of 5" - SputnikMusic.com "Questioner still managed to really impress me with their lengthy mixtures of beautiful melodies and harsher tones. Although each of their songs are fairly lengthy, the sweeping melodies really grab you and before you know it 10 minutes or so have already passed (the band actually went over their half hour set time and it felt as though they had just started). Vocalist Noel Mueller has a harsh growl that absolutely dominates the material and in a live setting his voice sounded extremely strong and kept your attention. You know you've seen a good performance when it seems like it ended way too fast, and I definitely want to watch these guys again. They're currently unsigned but there's a number of different labels that I could see picking them up (Translation Loss is one prime candidate that comes to mind) so I hope that they find someone to team up with." - CosmosGaming.com
