About me:
This QYC myspace is to get all QYC groups networking and broadening the horizon of friends all over Illinois. We have sites in Aurora, DeKalb, and Naperville. ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS, FEEL FREE TO COMMENT OR MESSAGE US. Please also let others know that this has been started.
About Us
QYC is committed to providing a safe, supportive, and respectful environment for adolescents, in order to facilitate ongoing personal growth and the development of a positive sexual identity, whether they identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or questioning.
History
Questioning Youth Center began in 1996 as a group of community members meeting to discuss concerns over the lack of available resources for GLBTQ youth. In 1997, the group reorganized into a steering committe for the purpose of forming a non-profit organization operating drop-in centers for GLBTQ youth aged 14 to 18. Since opening the first center in 1998, QYC has expanded to five centers operating in four different counties in Northwest Illinois, serving more than 600 youth aged 14 to 21. In 2002, QYC was awarded the Equality Illinois Award from the Illinois Chapter of the Human Rights Campaign. In 2003, QYC unveiled its first spin-off group, Our Turn, specifically designed to serve young women's issues.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is QYC?
A: Questioning Youth Center -- a safe place for people of any sexual orientation to participate in group discussions and activities.
Q: What kind of activities will we find at QYC drop-in centers?
A: Group discussions on a wide variety of topics, guest speakers, movie nights, game nights
Q: What is a typical drop-in center night like?
A: The first 30 minutes is very casual and social. This is followed by check-in -- where we introduce ourselves to everyone else. We then usually have group announcements from the staff and youth leaders followed by a 15 minute break to relax and socialize. When we come back, we either begin a group discussion, group activity, or welcome a guest speaker.
Q: Will I be accepted?
A: Yes. Everyone is accepted and treated with dignity and respect.
Q: What are some of the topics talked about in the groups?
A: School, jobs, coming out, dating and relationships, going to college, local activities, and current events.
Q: Who runs the centers?
A: Trained QYC volunteers and youth leaders.
