Never judge a book by the cover. The Quiet Nights Orchestra may sound gentle and kind, but behind the name hides a young ensemble that sparkles of intensity and interplay. The Stockholm based jazz-outfit was formed in 2006 by trombonist Peter Fredriksson and started out as an instrumental sextet playing original compositions. Nowadays the band has expanded to 8 members including the young talented vocalist Sofie Norling. Influences is ranging from classic Blue Note recordings, the nordic jazz scene from the 60’s, to the sounds of modern nujazz from various corners of the world. QNO is soon releasing their debut album “Chapter One” on P-Vine Records/Blues Interactions and Do Right! Music.
Brilliant work from this acoustic jazz combo -- a set that's got all the classic elements you might expect from its cover, but one that also comes across with some of the fresher jazz styles you'd find on labels like Schema or Ricky Tick! The group are more of a large combo than a full orchestra -- a very cool little lineup of trombone, trumpet, sax, flute, piano, bass, drums, and some extra added percussion -- which often brings a Latinish undercurrent to some of the album's rhythms -- usually with the same great energy you'd find in some of the Clarke/Boland projects of the 60s! The lovely Sofie Nordling sings on a number of cuts -- mixing her sweet tones with the group's burning instrumental solos -- and the album's an instant classic that we know we'll be digging for years.
"The debut album from Quiet Nights Orchestra stands up as one of the most inspired effort i've heard in a long time. It brings back all the colours of the northern european jazz
scene with a graceful swinging feel.....deserved to be loved" - Nicola Conte
“so nice I had to play it twice...and again...and again...and again...” – Gilles Peterson
”A very charming album indeed, with solid jazz and Latin influences - extremely lovely end result!” – Emily Jones
"I am impressed by QNO's playing, arranging and compositions" – Magnus Lindgren
“A very promising and soulful debut from Quiet Nights Orchetra!” - Bertil Strandberg.
Igår eftermiddag gick vi in i studion.
