..Where to begin... technically this was never really supposed to be a band. I (Quinn) had some solo shows lined up, but wanted to have a band behind me. Way back in January of this year, I started rehearsing some songs with Keith. I wanted to keep it real simple, just vocals, guitar, and drums, arranged like The Black Keys. ..I was having fun with the simplicity of it all, but I wanted to add some more color to the mix. I asked Brett if he would be interested in joining us for the shows, and from that point we became Quinn S. and The Blackbirds. Brett, Keith, and I had all been in bands together for a number of years, so it wasn’t hard for us to find common ground as musicians. We were perfectly content cramming our basement practice space with our music and we just assumed we’d approach these shows with high spirits, go out, rock out, and have as much fun as we could. I mean, if you’re not having fun, what’s the point? ..Our first show happened on March 1st, 2008 in the coffeehouse at Goucher College, located right on the edge of Towson, Maryland. It went over pretty well. I bled all over my guitar, we had people dancing, and most of all we enjoyed it immensely. ..From there, we played one of our usual haunts, St. John’s Phoenix, out in the countryside of Maryland. We blasted through our seven song set in under 30 minutes, all the while pretending we were just rocking out in the basement. This show was special. Why was it special? Well, for one, we got some great feedback which blew us away. We could tell people believed in what we were doing and that we were genuinely invested in our music. It was probably this show that changed our minds about what Quinn S. and The Blackbirds was. ..As I said before, we never really intended for this to be a band, we were just having fun, but now it’s more than that. That is not to say, of course, that we don’t have fun, but we now consider ourselves a band. Plus, you know it’s official when you make your band a MySpace page. ..My name might start the name of this band, but Brett and Keith complete it. This is no Gloria Estefan and The Miami Sound Machine, this is a group effort. A band is not the work of one individual, but the work of many.
