"Shirtless" Jeff McNulty AKA Dr J.M. McNulty received the appellation "Shirtless" on a hot summer afternoon while recording BloodHag's first single "The Dewey Decible System” their singer Jake was stuck under a heavy blanket recording vocals and everyone was sweating so hard Jeffery removed his shirt. (If that sounded kinda suggestive and slightly gay, well hey YOU weren’t there, everything was above board let me assure you.) That was the beginning of the “Shirtless”sessions. Flashback to the late 80’s when “Shirtless” bought his first 4 track….fast forward a little bit…no too far…OK here’s where he bought his first drum machine…a little bit more and here’s where he quits the Art Institute…things are picking up now OK STOP!
1997: “Shirtless” purchases his first ProTools rig. The Pachinko Parlour is born.
Soon after, “Shirtless” along with his good friend Robin Mullins starts Spork! Recordings documenting a very important time in the history of Seattle underground music, what we chose to call the Uncle Rockies scene. This was an amazing time beginning with the Lake Union Pub, and the Store Room and after their demise continuing with clubs like Uncle Rockies, Gibson's, Giggles, and many others continuing on with Pho Bang at Foxes and ending with the untimely demise of the Breakroom. The groups released by Spork! were some of the best of the time: BloodHag, the Promise Keepers (former Slappy White), HRDR (now the Intelligence), Pointy Birds, Bend Sinister (now the A-Frames) and the Bali Girls. All excellent bands and no two sounded alike.
Right around this time “Shirtless” joined forces with two friends, Kaanan Tupper and “Greedy” Greg Williamson to form the Bionic Ear studio in the basement of Scott Griggs’ house. (Thanks Grigsy!) Most of the Spork! stuff was recorded here along with demos and singles by Teen Cthulhu, Toy Train, Akimbo, the Bad Girls, UNI, the Get Down Syndrome, Evil Robot, Blue Collar, Vandemonium, Slit Liquor, Juke and many others. Alex Newport recorded a few things there too including Pointy Birds, Bali Girls and BloodHag.
“Shirtless” has since gone freelance recording at many studios including the Laundry Room, Uptone, and Soundhouse. He was the Media Lab Coordinator at the Old Fire House in Redmond recording many up and coming bands from the East Side. He has taught live sound and recording for the past five years for the Vera Project, Rock-School, and the Experience Music Project.
“Shirtless” Jeff McNulty is currently the Tech-Facilities manager at the Vera Project in Seattle Washington. He continues to teach sound and record bands at Vera’s new facilities in the Seattle Center.

Android Hero rocked the Mars Bar last night and I felt aroused in a strange way. You guys have one song that's so Killdozer, it fucking blew my mind. Way to to bring it. I had a blast! That's our old stomping ground too. I remember having Olys after Eternal 13 practices with you, mike and eric, down at the ol' Storeroom. Tear...
