AB 394--The Safe Place to Learn Act---is authored by Assemblymember Lloyd Levine (D-Van Nuys). It will outline concrete California school districts can take to protect students from harassment and discrimination.
Status: Passed by the entire Assembly on June 5! Now moves to the Senate where it will first be voted on by the Senate Education Ctte on July 11.
SB 777---Student Civil Rights Act is authored by State Senator Sheila Kuehl (D-Santa Monica). It will clarify existing California anti-discrimination laws. It will make them consistent with one another in order to make sure there is no confusion protecting students among teachers and school teachers when it comes to understanding the legal rights of students.
Status:Passed a vote by the entire Senate on May 24 and then it moved to the Assembly. Passed the Assembly Judiciary Ctte on June 27 with a vote of 7-3. Next step is the Assembly Education Ctte.
