When It's turned Off, mostly. Old movies are OK. Hate the pundits on the "news". Colbert is cool.
Books
Research volumes; Encyclopedias; Ephemera. Art books; Biographies of weird people; "The White Goddess" and "Smaller Classical Dictionary" are staple titles in my personal library. I prefer collecting books when they're free or from a library sale. Hardcover, first editions, signed and dedicated by the author are especially valued.
My friend, Athalyn J. Rose, discusses her new book, "Coming Out of the Dark" and the unusual events that inspired it.
Heroes
Alltime Biggest Heroes: My ancestor Sequoya, Cherokee Medicine Man; The Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. and Nina Simone.
Vocalese Hero : Kurt Elling. Vocal role-models: Big Mama Thornton, Toni Lynn Washington.
Guitar Heroes: Richard Thompson, Dave Alvin, Jonny Lang, Ricky "King" Russell, Timo Arthur, Jimi Hendrix. Bass: Jef Charland, Mike Rivard, Roger Waters, Charles Mingus & Timo Shanko.
Real Life Heroes: Musicians who play for the people.

Hey, now: Here we all are enjoying the fabulous Boston Horns with Barrence Whitfield at HeatherFest #14! Oooh, look, the boogalooing blonde moving from right to left is ME! At 15 I had the opportunity to slink, surreptitiously, into a Blues club in Boulder,Colorado to hear Big Mama Thornton and her Allstar Band. She stood about 6 feet away from me, belting out versions of R&B, Blues and Soul songs like I had never experienced before. Well, NOT on my portable mono record player, at least.
I was struck someplace in the Spirit at that time, I believe. Some sort of juju went down. I was 1500 miles from where I properly belonged when this odd transferrence occurred. Lightyears away from my culturally cocooned, small town origins.
The love and passion for live music- particularly "roots" music- has been with me ever since. Marriage to and divorce from a Blues musician (the late Maynard Silva, who was a "hands-on" & deliberately guiding father to our son, Milo, who's now 22 and a disciplined musician in his own right) did not drive me away from the Music that formed me. If anything, my Blues are the real thing. I've earned them the hard way, by surviving tough stuff that would've killed an ordinary, wimpy girl. Some folks may remember me as a Music reviewer for the Martha's Vineyard Times, between 1988-1998. I gave some real good press to a slew of notable players on the forefront of acoustic folk, jazz, blues and rock. As well, I covered theater, books, art, education and I interviewed many community activists. I'd probably be doing it today if I could still afford to live there. Believe me, economic exile is no fun at all. People forget all about you when you get washed away by the tides of commerce & "progress". Today, I remain an artist and freelance writer. I'm eminently open to meeting new folks. Kind of shy, at first. Very warm when I get comfortable with somebody, though. Don't be afraid to say "hi". Contrary to some accounts: I don't bite.
Personally, I make all the jewelry shown in these "my photo" images, plus hundreds of other original pieces that I haven't had the time to shoot and post yet. Check 'em out!
Now, you may ask, "how does this magic happen"? Well, first, I dream up the design. It can take five minutes or five years, depending on the evolution of the idea I'm working with.
After the initial vision is achieved I create a rubber mold (the surgical and technical part of the process) and then cast the findings, myself, on a centrifugal casting machine. When the metal cools I hand finish each piece (silvertone, antiqued, gilded, shiny or gun-metal flat) and set the unusual stones into place. Pretty simple, yet pretty complicated, too. This is how FINE ART JEWELRY gets born.
As well, I offer lacquered pewter tack pins in a myriad of themes. They're inexpensive and excellent for making a statement on your jacket, hat, backpack, vest, purse or Ipod case. Custom orders are always welcome. NEWEST ADDITION (copy and paste into your browser) http://mysite.verizon.net/vzezosrp/barackobamapin

Gotta keep the flame goin' on down the road. Love to hear from all practitioners of creativity, in all genres, from everywhere in the Cosmos. If any or all of the above listed character traits fit your persona, please gimme a shout-out here. PEACE.
