Rachael Cantu is a guitar-driven singer/songwriter known for her unique and evocative blend of indie rock infused with distinctly powerful vocals, gentle melodies and heartfelt lyrics. Her catalog showcases diverse and versatile songwriting, which effortlessly ranges from upbeat pop to forlorn folk. It's no wonder she has been aptly described as“something a mix of The Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde, PJ Harvey, Sarah McLachlan and Norah Jones.”
Born in Orange County, this SoCal native is on the brink of self-releasing her next highly anticipated record around October 2009. Produced by Futcher (The Be Good Tanyas) in Vancouver, the captivatingly memorable and cohesive collection of ten tracks from the still untitled CD clearly highlights Rachael's maturity, growth and evolution as a rising songwriter and musician. A departure from her debut album, the new record features a handful of upbeat pop rock tunes, a couple of midtempo and soothing songs offset by a few characteristically haunting pieces plus a slide guitar inspired ditty for good measure.
Rachael's discography consists of three previous releases. After her twenty-first birthday, she moved to Boston where she caught the attention of the local music scene with her“Blood Laughs" EP, which also landed her a gig touring with indie darlings Tegan and Sara. Released in 2006, her impressive debut album“Run All Night" (Q Division), received critical acclaim as it rocketed up the CMJ Top 200 where it sat comfortably next to artists like Ryan Adams and Neko Case. Fueled by the success, Rachael went back on tour with Tegan and Sara, as well as Ben Lee. In January 2009, Rachael's self-titled EP was released and is a stripped down version of what to expect on her forthcoming record mentioned above.
In January 2009, Rachael' s song "Devil's Thunder" (version available on iTunes) was prominently featured on an episode of ABC's“Private Practice", which is music supervised by the influential Alexandra Patsavas. In April/May 2009, Rachael toured with blues legend B.B. King on his West Coast run and she will also be joining B.B. on a couple of Southeast dates in October 2009. In addition, in July 2009, Rachael opened for one of the top-selling female artists of all time, Pat Benatar.
With the building momentum, her upcoming CD will satisfy her eager fanbase, re-introduce her to a national audience and it may well blow up. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for more to come...
