Influences
Artists I admire: Nina Simone, Coldplay, Radiohead, The Beatles, Aimee Mann, Bob Dylan, Burt Bacharach, Marvin Gaye, Prince, Dave Matthews, Death Cab for Cutie, Arctic Monkeys, Beth Orton, Massive Attack, Cowboy Junkies, Imogen Heap, Bernard Hermann (lovely film scores). And the list goes on and on...
Bonnie Hayes (songwriter for Bonnie Raitt, Huey Lewis, and many others)--"Bonnie is one of the most gifted people I have ever met. A wonderful songwriter and an awesome musician."
Imagine a gene lab accident. Beakers holding the DNA of Tracey Thorne, Elisabeth Fraser and Morrissey crash to the floor, their contents mixing and recombining as they drip down the wall toward an electrical outlet. Days after the cleanup, the technicians lean over their benches. In a corner, behind a seam in the flesh-colored linoleum baseboard where the mops couldn't reach, is a still-damp spot...
In the bustling world of indie pop, acts come and go. But Rachel Margaret is carving out a niche all her own-- at once both cutting edge and timeless. Passionate vocals floating over dreamy synths and hyper-hooky guitars, coupled with amazing songwriting, have garnered Rachel serious buzz in the underground.
"Rachel has that crucial faculty of self-criticality that amplifies her talent and makes her material shine", says producer Bonnie Hayes. "In my experience, that's what separates the great ones from everybody else."
Her debut EP, the critically acclaimed "Buena Vista Park" (released July, 2007) was a surprise hit this summer with Canadian/International fans as all six of Rachel's songs from the EP, plus her song "Prisoner" (from her upcoming album) occupied the top seven spots out of over 6000 songs in the prestigious Sirius Fan Choice Awards.
Rachel's songs have received radio play on numerous stations across the country, including KFOG, Energy 92.7, KUSF, SomaFM, and New Jersey's own Homegrown Radio, among others.
With the impending release of her sophomore album, "Temporary Sanity", due out in late January 2009, Rachel has already received numerous offers to remix the title track. She is currently booking American and European dates for her first major tour in Fall 2009.
A product of the University of Texas and the Ecole Normale Superieur de Musique in Paris (the one not in Texas), Rachel is currently in graduate school in the Bay Area.
There is a tangible element of sadness and longing to the work that is evocative of love gone wrong. Is it true to life? "Well, basically, I am pretty cynical about love at the moment, but that doesn't mean I'll stay that way. I guess maybe right now it's more fun to write about love with perspective. It's like a tightrope act. It's only interesting if it's way off the ground and there isn't a net."

May 1st, International Workers' Day, commemorates the historic struggle of working people throughout the world, and is recognized in every country except the United States, Canada and South Africa. This despite the fact that the holiday began in the 1880's in the United States, with the fight for an eight-hour work day.
In honor of this historic day, I'm making this special wish for you: May your work be fruitful and your harvest bountiful!
