Writing has maintained my sanity through some very difficult times. Venting my raging emotions, darkest thoughts, and wildest fantasies has long been a hobby of mine. Now, it's my life. Okay, that and exploring my ever-evolving sexual appetites.
Intellectual curiosity, as well as a need for constant challenge and stimulation, led me to study a number of fields -- from Chemical Engineering to Theatre. I guess that makes me a Jill of all trades . . . but a mistress of a few, I hope. This, along with a love of research, is very useful in my writing, enabling me to create characters with a wide variety of interests and knowledge.
As a teen, most of my reading consisted of required schoolwork, but the first book I fell in love with was Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. I loved everything about it -- its dry wit, vivid characters, and its romantic but not overly sappy story. It gave me a newfound hunger to read, and read I did -- everything from the Brontë sisters to Kurt Vonnegut. The second book I fell in love with was J. D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye.
As disparate as Austen and Salinger may be, I think they are still strong influences in my own writing. Take Elizabeth Bennet's strength, intelligence, and wry sense of humor and Holden Caulfield's sharp, edgy voice and you've got most of my heroines. And no matter what hell I may put my characters through, everything usually turns out all right in the end.
Some other early favorites of mine were V.C Andrews, Stephen King, and Anne Rice. Actually, I read every Anne Rice novel I could find. It was while searching in Cornell University's bookstore for novels I hadn't read that I stumbled across Rice's Sleeping Beauty trilogy. That was my introduction to erotica and it had a profound impact on my writing and my sexuality -- although it wasn't until recently that I realized the extent of my submissive nature.
I began several psychological thrillers after graduating high school in 1991, but I didn't begin "seriously" writing until 2000, when I completed a romance novel that was never published. Since then, I've been actively seeking publication. I've written political satire for a website, had a couple literary short stories published in print, had a few more appear on a short-lived literary website, won a little on-line romance writing contest for a chapter I wrote, and had a complete manuscript under serious consideration with a chick-lit publisher before being ultimately turned down.
My writing's always had a strong sexual element, but it wasn't until 2003 that I explored writing erotica. While waiting to hear about my chick-lit novel, I discovered Literotica.com and offered my services as a volunteer editor. Since I was editing other writers' work, I thought it only right that I post my own story on Literotica. So under the pseudonym "SexySoBeChick," I submitted "A+ in Reproduction," which received an overwhelmingly positive response. That was then followed by "Macy's Window" and "Better to be Bad"
Although I was thrilled with the feedback I received from Literotica readers, I wanted to focus on paying erotica markets, so I joined the Erotica Readers and Writers Association. ERWA has been a remarkable resource and I've learned a great deal about writing erotica. More recently, I joined an excellent new writers group,
The Erotic Literature League (T.E.L.L), and serve as list moderator.
TELL is a free resource for erotica and erotic romance writers and I highly recommend it to writers looking to network with other writers, workshop stories, and discuss the business of writing. I'm also an assistant editor for
Logical Lust Publications.
Under the pseudonym "Rachel McIntyre," two of my flashers, "Vixen 6.9" and "A Modern-day Narcissus," have appeared in ERWA's Feature Gallery. I also co-wrote "Santa Baby" which placed in Logical Lust's "Santa's Coming!" contest. My flash fiction piece "Order in the Court" placed in Logical-Lust's 2004 Flash Fiction Challenge. In Logical Lust's 2005 Flash Fiction Challenge, "His Salvation" won Best Overall and "Fucking Tech Support" won Funniest Entry. My story
"Come Away With Me" currently appears in the BDSM e-book anthology,
Eternal Bonds. And "Vixen 6.9" will appear in
Cream: The Best of the Erotica Readers and Writers Association
Even though I wasn't born here, I'm a Florida girl through and through. My love of the Sunshine State is often reflected in my writing. I grew up in the Miami area, but currently live in a small coastal community further north along Florida's East Coast. Alas, I share living space with a temperamental Persian cat, who barely acknowledges my existence and who I'd never claim to "own."
I've learned a great deal about what it takes to be a working writer and I learn even more every day -- which is what I love. I'm currently concentrating on writing romance, chick-lit, and erotica, but hope to go back to those unfinished psychological thrillers one day.
