Rachel Newton is from Edinburgh with strong family ties to the North-West Highlands. Attending a Gaelic medium school and through the work of the Feis movement, she soon discovered her passion for traditional music. Her upbringing in both Highland and City cultures has meant that she has been strongly influenced by a diversity of styles and this is evident in both her playing and singing. Rachel attended the prestigious City of Edinburgh Music School, and gained a BMus(Hons) in Folk and Traditional Music from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne where she became involved in many different projects including trio Vicars of Blyth. In her final year at Newcastle, as well as appearing on albums by Alistair Anderson and Sandra Kerr, Rachel released ‘Dear Someone’ with flautist Lillias Kinsman Blake and ‘A Different Season’ with BBC 2 Folk Award nominated The Shee. Rachel also has experience in performing music for theatre (winning a Critics Award for Theatre in Scotland 09 for Best Use of Music alongside her two colleagues in the Rowantree Theatre Company's 'Lasses O') and film (one of her songs is used on the soundtrack for the BIFA award winning film, ‘The Inheritance’). In 2005, Rachel was a finalist in the BBC Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year.
Hi Rach, Good to see you last night and have a wee chat. What a gorgeous gig! We both loved it, great stuff! As I said, I'll move heaven and earth to get to a Shee gig this summer. X
Poor Rach, I hope you're back to normal soon. I'm away at my sister's in Lancashire at the moment, so near to CC, yet so far. Looking forward to some good gigs this year. As I said earlier, I'll catch the Shee sometime this year. X
Aw, thanks for the ticket offer, Rach. I've checked the map and Epsom is a 'bit' farther than I thought and as it's a mid-week gig, it will be difficult to say the least. So, no, don't bother and we'll Shee you in the summer some time. What's this about you losing your voice? Take care, Phil xXx
Well, it will be a quiet new year here I'm afraid... I'm never one for the mass hysteria... and besides it's not such as big a deal south of the border! Maybe one new year I'll make it up to Scotland and learn how to celebrate it properly! We have lots of nice food and drink in so we'll enjoy that anyway! :o)
