Band MembersOther than Miss Ries, it often involves one Ms. Ariel Bolles (of royal blood and in line to inherit a castle in England) on upright bass & harmonies. In Chicago & on records, it's a revolving cast including Kevin O'Donnell on drums (Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire, Jon Rauhouse, Neko Case), Nathaniel Braddock on rip-roaring guitar (Occidental Brothers Dance Band International, Edith Frost, The Zincs, The Ancient Greeks), Casey Meehan on keys (himself, Love Story in Blood Red, The Means), Joel Paterson on guitar & pedal steel (Devil in a Woodpile, Kelly Hogan, the Western Elstons), Alison Chesley on cello (Verbow, Poi Dog Pondering), and Maria McCullough on violin.

Scattered across our fine land, the band also involves the awesomness which is Alisa Rose & Adam "Roscoe" Roszkiewicz on violin & mandolin/guitar (respectively), Neil Cleary on drums, keys & sweetness, Andru Bemis on banjo & guitar, Mike Reeb on drums, Mr. Jesse Graber on fiddle, guitar & mandolin, Drew Lindsay on keys, Dan Salyers on drums, Chris Merrill on upright bass, Anais Mitchell as herself, Robert Blake and Louis Ledford.

Sounds LikeHere's what some say:

If Rachel's voice were a tree branch, a ripe russet apple would hang at its end: a gift, there to take... (cont.) - saidthegramophone

This record is like taking a luxurious bath in an Art Deco tub on the rooftop of a lived-in brownstone on a starry night... (cont.) - Seven Days, Vermont

I've been listening to it for weeks, but continue to hear new things in Rachel's classically trained voice, in the beautiful analog recording, and in the sparse yet perfectly aligned backing band. It's hard to sum up any great songwriter in just one or two sentences, but for me Rachel's songs are such a marvel of simplicity and restraint... (cont.) - Songs:Illinois

From the first cascading melody line of “Lonely Spires,” Rachel Ries ensnares the listener in a gorgeous web of silvery vocals, homey fingerpicking and strumming, and literary lyrics wrapped in mercurial, yet soothing tunes... (cont.) - Acoustic Guitar

Without a Bird is, without a doubt, a modern classic. Thoroughly engaging music from an individual who is doing everything right... (cont.) - babysue.com

   About Rachel Ries
There's something about this one lonely farm in South Dakota where there was dirt under my nails & paint in my hair. A typewriter in the kitchen and a piano in the other room. Now I find it's Chicago and all these dear & temporal homes scattered about. It's travel and trying to be good. It's trying to shake off this one shaky muse without shaking myself loose.

A video for Chicago. Created by Amy Lynn Kazymerchyk, the Stone Fox.

listened to your old record on a car ride with a new friend this weekend, and when we woke up the next day we had both had a dream from the lyrics in Lonely Spires.

Or just because you're supposed to. Or to pay a bill. Or because there's nothing else to do. Or to punish yourself!

In my own delirium and excitement, I hastily requested "Luckiest One," a superb song--which you performed admirably, of course--but what I really longed to hear was "October." I retired that night--knowing you were leaving the next day--with a little bittersweetness at not having that particular heart-vacancy filled.
So, until next time, (Portland maybe)

all my best,

Rachel, your song for grandma is so special: sweet and beautiful with a tinge of sadness that I love about many of your songs. I heard you play it at the kitty kat club in Minneapolis and was blown away as usual! Thanks for sharing your voice and inspiring, thoughtful lyrics.
Hope you're doing well!

Howdy Rachel,
I've been listening over and over to the country ep with Anais, on this unusual sunny day in the UK. I hope you'll come back and play over here sometime soon.
We have an launch party coming up for our EP "Telephones & Traffic Lights", on April 29th at Rhythm Factory. You should check it out if you happen to be on our shores by then.
